Season\'s Greetings

As an ex professional seafarer, I would like to send my very best wishes to all current and past professional seafarers, that you will have the best Christmas possible whether you are at home or away on board ship. Also wishing you a peaceful and prosperous 2007. Bless you all, you're the salt of the earth.

A lovely post tugboat!

I always spare a thought for all the poor lads and ladies on watch or hard over in their bunks on christmas, hopefully next year they'll be on leave instead.

Tugboat,

Indeed a lovely post, I have some of the club out on their way to the America's delivering Yacht's. Left Canaries Wed's last.

And to all the watch keepers in the RN at the Moment,
'Life's a bitch Jack!' /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Happy Birthday Jesus! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Season\'s Greetings

Given that 90-something percent of what we consume in this country comes here by ship, I feel somewhat aggrieved that merchant seafarers don't even figure in the thinking of most of our populace. Seafarers, and I include our Royal Navy brothers and our stalwart fishermen, are invisible to most, despite the fact that the country would quickly cease to function without them. I feel particularly emotional about seafarers at this time of year, because even those who are at home for Christmas can feel apart from those who they are with. I know this from my own experiences over the years. With shorter trips and more frequent crewchanges, those who are home for Christmas probably reached home only days beforehand, and others will be leaving home soon after. This really affects one's ability to enjoy the festivities and feel a part of the celebrations.
When it's 0330hrs and it's blowing old boots you can sometimes feel like you're the only person in the world who's working and it gets lonely. It's a tough job at the best of times and you should all feel proud of the importance of what you do and of the contribution you make to the lives of all of us. Take care of yourselves, gents and ladies too, I'm proud to have been one of you.

You have really stopped me in my tracks,

I can remember 1989/90 Gulf, aboard HM Warship, Christmas at sea in defence watches, thinking of home............

1985/86 South Atlantic, around the Horn in December!

1987/88 Barrack Guard shore base Portsmouth, Christmas duty watch.

Thoughts to all of you out there MN and RN, stay dry and warm!!!
