I can't be sure but I reckon over the last 4 years I've read about 4 articles on binoculars under the "on test" banner - where the team all test out a number of different makes and give their feelings. That includes this months PBO.

Now the technology of bins hasn't exactly come on in leaps and bounds since Nelsons day (indeed my Mum showed me a pair reputedley used by my Great Grandad 100 years ago - crisp and clear - wonderful) - so 4 articles in as many years is a bit excessive don't you think?

Perhaps summed up by one comment I read..."Myra found the button for the electrically lit compass was set much too far towards the centre of the body - the tip of her middle finger naturally rested 30mm short"....ahhh diddums.

It's a tough old life innit.

In a related vein, it bugs me when the news comes on and the headline story of the day is something like 'Gordon Brown predicts UK growth by 0.2% over the next 12 months blah blah blah"

I'd rather they just said "There's no news today because nothing's happened. Now here's half hour of Road Runner cartoons" or something.

Technology may not have changed much but I thought that one of the more useful comments in the article. Or are women and children only allowed to sit in the cockpit feeling sick rather than actually use any of the instruments reserved for manly skippering?

Frustrating isn't it - especially as the whole thing is a thinly-veiled party election broadcast. Having heard the statement there can be very little doubt over the timing of the next election.

However, like it or not, the state of the economy is probably the most significant influence on our daily lives - far more so than which brand of centre-rght (= tory) party is in power.

I certainly think it far more important than the latest allegations about Plonket
