Don't understand your argument. Are you saying he should use his engine when it's not necessary? I'm with OP sailing boats are for sailing. If you want to motor everywhere, buy a motorboat.

I wasn't aware it was an argument but anyway I've never know anyone to have an engine that's mostly used for idling like the OP suggested. I've got a a yacht that I sail in as much as possible but there is a lot of times when the engine needs to be used. There are plenty days that I get away but the next day there might be zero wind but still need to get somewhere. It happens so I'm sure it just doesn't happen to me.

I would suggest that, from those that actually go anywhere, one will find that they use the engine a lot more than they will admit ( or realise)
