I have just dismantled the stern light on my (new to me) boat.

As you will see from the photo below both the gasket round the metal cover has disintegrated and the sealing material between the glass and the metal is beyond decay.

What should I use to replace both of these seals? Would a squirt of silicon sealant do the trick?

If you have some silicone sealant handy I think it would do the job. No reflector in there is there? The acetic acid produced by a silicone sealant may well take the "silvering" off if there is . Dont ask how I know this !

You might want to grease or apply some kind of mould release agent to one of the main jomt surfaces so that you can open it again to replace the bulb

Alternatively an adhesive sealant such as Sikaflex , CT1, PU40, Stixall etc

OTOH now might be the opportunity to replace the whole caboodle with one that meets current standards.

My preferred sealant/adhesive is PU40 (it has now been renamed though) from tool station. £4 a cartridge. It may pay you to use cling film as a bond breaker in case you need to take apart to change the bulb. Stick the lenses on with epoxy - Araldite.

When I needed a gasket recently I found an old mouse mat that was made of a rubber (probably neoprene) base with a printed fabric face. I peeled off the fabric and cut a perfectly acceptable gasket from the rubber part. The same method might be a good way of gasketting the metal part back to the boat.

If it's not an adhesive sealant you want I'd go with butyl tape - if it's an adhesive type you want then I'd still go butyl tape, but then wrap some amalgamating tape round the join a few times...
