sealing perspex windows

I have removed the perspex windows in their aluminium frames from my project Nicholson 30 footer. I have taken the perspex out of the frames and ordered new perspex. The sealant used to seal the aluminium frames to the glass fibre of the boat was a grey putty like material which was sticky but had not set rigid.

What would be best to
1 seal the perspex into the aluminium frames and
2 seal the frames to the boat
any advice most welcome

Sikaflex 295UV is often recommended.

Not sure about 1) but years ago just used silicone sealant clear and only removed some of the protective film from the perspex before refittting. There must be a better way though.

For sealing frame to GRP I have just bought a tube of bedding compound from eagle boat windows to fix the the one leaking and two broken windows I have. It is at the bottom of the following page.

Polysulphide

I am doing the same on our Konsort Duo. I have fitted new seals to the glass in the ally frame, and am using polysulphide sealant to fit the frame to the grp.

The grey putty like material that was sticky was butyl. On my CS27 (designed by C&N) all deck fittings as well as the hull/deck joint were sealed with good quality butyl (in 1977) and are still leak free. I would use it to seal between the frames and the glass fibre.

I would not use it to seal the acrylic into the frames. For that I would use a good silicone like Dow 795.

No! The OP certainly shouldn't use polysulphide sealants on his acrylic windows - it attacks acrylic!

I only stated my use of polysulphide to seal the frame to the grp, as I had a rubber/neoprene seal for the glass window.

....and I can tell anyone, that it was a pig of a job to fit the seal and glass into the frame.

I've just replaced my perspex windows and used Arbomast BR - which I'm pretty sure is the stuff Eagle Boat Windows use. It works really well - just make sure you leave it a few days before removing any excess - it's much easier / cleaner after it's skinned over. I ordered mine in via Force 4 but plenty of people stock it

As previously stated I used Butyl.Got it from the local glaziers.Was about 5yrs ago,still ok.They use it on conservatory,s.Easy to put on.Get a massive roll for under a £10.Trade name Flexitape.
