I finally got round to removing capping pieces from Flap's coachroof where water ingress has stained the mahogany. These are plates which cover the endgrain of the coaming and 15mm contour on the deck canvas overlap. Evidently the brown mastic found under the pieces had failed.
I have removed the mastic and treated the timber with clear cuprinol. I will try to remove the darkening with oxalic acid before sealing the timber again.
The question is what mastic would be best to bed the capping pieces onto. I like the idea of putty and white lead, but fear it won't last as well as some of the modern concoctions. I don't want a permanent bond, so am thinking of Sikaflex 291 or 3M 4200.
What is the percieved wisdom?

If it is wood to wood I use Acrylic frame sealant which is overpaintable from Wicks, I got fed up with using some of the marine goo's and getting it everywhere.

Acrylic will clean off with White Spirits and can be disassembled afterwards without damage to the wood faces........... if your careful!

Acrylic is ok to a degree, bu if it rains prior to curing it washes out, not helpful. An oil based sealant is pretty good, some builders merchants stock a variety. It is less expensive than Sikaflex range by a long way, available in various colours. The other alternative is Butyl rubber sealant, again not too difficult to find in builders merchants and can be dis-assembled and works.

Sikaflex cleans off with Methylated Spirits easily. I'd go with Sika.

...or Baby Wipes!

If you don't want a permanent bond, you may as well go down the traditional route - my experience has been that when modern mastics begin to fail, they become very good at holding moisture in against the wood: it can take only a minor failure in one small place for water to get in along the entire seam. An additional advantage of using white lead putty is that it is a biocide, so will kill any rot spores that may have got in there.

Yep quite true John.......... but I wouldn't apply any sealant in the rain just in case it trapped moisture and Acylic dries in 1 hr and can then be painted. Although I normally wait a couple of days. I stand by what I said, it works for me.

I expect you have something to do with it? It's one thing giving advice, but as your first six posts are identical ( Fishking posts )I would think you are doing a bit of marketing. Not really within the forum rules.

Use white lead putty. The putty is made with Raw Linseed Oil, which never cures, though it will dry out and the putty will eventually become brittle. However you can radically extend the useful life by sealing the faying surfaces first (shellac is fine) and ensuring that the exposed edges are painted. It will stay soft a very long time. If you don't want to use white lead for safety reasons I'd suggest an oil-based mastic {I get mine from Travis Perkins,) which again will stay supple for yonks, but you will lose the valuable biocidal qualities of white lead.

Traditional methods and materials require periodical maintenance and replacement, but the structures they are used on can have a life of hundreds of years if this schedule is maintained.

Modern alternatives are good for the design life of the structure, maybe twenty-five years, maybe a little more. After which the structure itself will be knacked, so who cares?.

You choose where you're going and you use the appropriate materials.

Well Iam sorry for trying to help people . Just because I use a product that i feel is very good and try help out people who ask the question on a forum "whats the best sealant to use" suddenly Im doing something wrong. Then maybe the posting of all questions should be banned .

Nope. You only had posted 6 times when I answered and they were all exactly the same answer. That is; you only posted when you could try to sell your product.
That is not being a helpful forumite, that is trying to sell a product on a forum.
There is a "For Sale" forum on this site for that. But even that is supposed to be for private sales.
The management do allow links to web sites in forumite's signatures providing you put a reciprocal link on your web site.

The most obvious deception you have perpetrated is that you haven't made it obvious you are selling a product, you just say here is a great product, as though you were making a satisfied-customer recommendation.

Why is the twat still here? I pushed the mod button ages ago and result; SFA.

I feel some front bottom postings coming on as we have an unmoderated forum.
