Sealine T60 Review

Houghn,
The smiley faces mean I'm puzzled.

I'm puzzled as to why anyone bothers contributing to a boating forum when they think that anyone who says anything nice about a boat or boating is a liar in the pay of a corrupt industry.

And Ari, I'm equally puzzled as to when you last read one of my boat reports. Assuming we're talking about MBY, it must have been in early 1997 -- in which case you have a better memory than me, because I can't even remember what the boat was -- let alone what I said about it!

All the best
Tim

You don't seem to understand the concept of reviews at all really do you? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The idea is to give unbiased feedback as to the merits or otherwise of a particular product (in this case boats). You seem to be of the opinion that a boat review should be just something that says nice things about a boat (and saying anything bad indicates that you don't like boats).

As I said before, you need to go and have a look at a few quality car magazines. To quote the example above, Car absolutely slated the new Hummer H3 this month, said it was a terrible thing. But they also tested the new Audi R8 and loved it.

Presumably your take on that would be that the bloke who tested the Hummer just doesn't like cars then..? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Genuinely odd.

Oh and slight confusion here, my fault. Masaccio seemed to suggest above that you were the most "hard hitting" boat reviewer and my comment that therefore no one actually is then because there simply aren't any hard hitting boat reviews.

In fact (as has been mentioned by others) most reviews read exactly the same with the boat make changed so I've no idea who's written what, just that there are never ever any negative viewpoints in boat reports. As I said before, even the new group tests (which I had high hopes for) just conclude that they're all blimmin marvellous and you should just buy the one you like the most. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

just bcz someone slags off a car-hummer in this case- doesnt mean anything more than he personally doesnt like it. He has his own set of values, just as everyone else does. Personally, he could tell me this was the best car he has ever driven and an absolute bargain, but I couldnt care bcz, personally, I'd buy a Jeep or Merc if I wanted some sort of 4*4 (even if its not quite the same vehicle). Thats my bias.So I dont think we should look to car reviewers as some sort of standard bearers of reviewing-they are often too full of their own smugness, and their opinions as biased as anyone elses. Take Top Gear, even these media supremos of car reviewing rarely agree about anything. So, to boat reviewing. Well, I m coming to a conclusion that everytime a boat gets well praised it seems to have 100pct correlation to being totally unsaleable on the second hand market. Its like a kiss of death! Or maybe, they just then become overpriced, so most sane people choose something else. After a few hours on a boat what can you really conclude?
-how it handles
-quality of build
-design/layout/practicality
-safety

Those are still subjective. I have found that the observations I read about in magazines have made me much more aware when looking over a new boat (to me) what is likely to work-for me. And also just how often you think, blimey, how could they have cocked that up so much. But in the end, its what I think of the boat, not some magazine that matters to me.

Well, well. What have I started here?

My original post was not intended as a dig at reviewers or at a particular boat. It was simply that when I was out in my boat last Friday I spent probably 30 minutes within a couple of cables of a new boat which looked as if it was being sea trialled out of PetersOpal with some customers on board. There was nothing else about so I had plenty of time to look and one or two things occurred to me which I thought might amuse someone if I wrote them into a spoof review. I actually thought I had made one valid comment to the effect that one aspect of the current fashion for huge windows in the owner's cabin is that people can see in, as well as out.

FWIW I like boats and I like reading boat reviews. I do think the latter are about where car reviews were pre-Clarkson. Whether there's much of a market for boat reviewers to say that they'd rather saw their hands off with a blunt swiss army knife than drive such and such a model is debatable. Maybe someone should try.
