It's all about the engines. Early ones with (I think) KAD44 or Merc outdrives were a bit underpowered. Also, some problems with the sliding roof on early boats, fixed later. Hull, layout, etc. looks good to me, and hasn't changed much, it's just those pesky early engine options (mostly the fault of the engine builders, who didn't have any outdrives powerful enuf at the time).
If you can get one with KAD300's, that should at least hit the 30knot mark. Still not a rocketship, tho. If you could get one, say a 2003 model, used on a lake, for maybe £189k or thereabouts, that would seem to be fairly good value for money to me /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Noticeable that the tweaked S42 has now ditched the roof, and has it as an option. An S42 with a couple of D6-350's is a very fine craft indeed...
Some S41's suffer very badly from chine walking. I know two people with S41's, One chine walks the other doesn't and the reason why one doesn't is because it has electronic trim tabs which are constantly adgusting to keep the boat on the straight and narrow.
I have had both boat behind me on the way to Brighton and the difference in their ride was very noticable.
Also early models with mercruisers kept blowing up Legs. Loads re engined to volvo engines under warranty. I think there was a modification to the mercruiser legs which sprayed water over the leg to help keep it cool.
You forgot that they're not the prettiest of boats. But...... pound for pound you're unlikely to find a modern sports boat that gives you so much space.
If you get one with the right engines and electronic trim tabs you're on to a winner. I'd buy one.
Actually I know where there is an S42 for sale in excellent condition with all the right bits. Very well looked after, immaculate. £199000 PM me if anyones interested.
I knew several people with them. Only problem was chine walk, they loved the size and accomodation (huge). Only other downside is that for a sportscruiser it has a lot of windage and is prone to the 'wind effect' when in close handling. I saw two skewered on to the edge of pontoons in one year alone. mind you the obligatory empty bottles of chardonnay on board may have been a factor.
I would have one with the electronic trim tabs, at the right price of course!
I know of a S43, same as a s41 but big volvo V drives, normal "p" bracket an shafts and bronze props, every extra Air con, Genarator to crane/passereile. In fact when it was bought every extra box was ticked.
With the extra weight these don't chine ride, less service cost with no legs, anodes cheaper and last all year, the new type sun roof.
Probably the best of the S/ 41/42/43s models.
Please PM me if anyones interested and I will pass your info onto the owner
It also has a Avon jet rib, but can be sold separately if someone wants one
