Wiggo comments "aren't we overdue for some Sealine bashing". As a Sealine fan I have to say we bring a lot of this on ourselves. Take the teak decking debate, for example, only Sealine owners would try to defend what is obviously a cheap substitute for the real thing and it reflects badly on our taste, values and, I am afraid, suggests that this is the basis of our decision making when we choose a boat.

I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve here. The outcome of the debate was that the 'plastic' teak was used only on Sealine's submergeable rear deck and was a fuctional requirement. The rest of the decking which does not need to spend time under water is good quality thick teak. I think misleading threads like yours really don't help in boat purchase decision making.

Re: Sealine

The main indictment against sealine and their clients is a mutual acceptance of low-grade orangey-brown Formica with an unconvincing "birds-eye maple" pattern on it, used for everything from the dashboards, table tops and switch/fuse panels.

Refusal to change this for the past twenty years means they risk referral to the UN Style Council, and hopefully the whole lot will have to be forcibly ripped out and replaced.

I'm going to take this post at face value. I don't think anyone here goes in for Sealine bashing per se. I had a go at the 305 recently because my experience with it was bad but, equally, I've bigged up the 410/F43 recently because my own experience with it was good as it was with a S37 I also owned
I find your statement about buying a Sealine reflecting badly on your tastes and values to be bizarre and probably only designed to wind up other forumites. As it happens, I think the Sealine brand stands for practicality, innovation and value for money amongst other things and, apart from that, buying one is supporting British manufacturing industry or whats left of it

TCM
I know exactly what you mean.
That orangey-brown maple colour is dreadful.
We actually managed to find a Sealine with a similar material but much more sophisticated colour.
Have you seen what they are currently using?
A sort of grey plastic - Looks even worse.
Maybe I'm old fashoned.

Here's a picture of ours - much better than the orange stuff.

Re: Sealine

OK, I'll bite (and probably regret it)...

We have owned two Sealines from new, an S28 and a C39.
You won't get too much in the way of Sealine bashing here as we were happy enough with both boats. Agree with Deleted User above - we purchased after looking at the opposition and made our choice on what we perceived to be value for money.
We got what we paid for.
I realise they are not to everyones taste then again, neither is leopardskin /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Sealine

Its actually not Formica, its a thin foil laid on aluminium then covered with varnish. I know cos it peeled off my flybridge panel and I couldn't find anyone to re-do it. I found the answer though, I replaced it with Formica which looks exactly the same /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: leopardskin

What interests me is this perceived "value for money" thing that keeps cropping up.

People reply that yes they're not quite up to market leaders in terms of quality and finish but they're "value for money".

But in the recent MBM test between the Sealine 42/5, Fairline 40 and Princess 42, with the same engines the Sealine was within about £5K of the Princess, this on a £300,000 boat!

Is that whats regarded as value for money, a 2% cost saving? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: leopardskin

In the case of the S28 and C39 - excellent prices acheived when buying and selling - nothing else compared.

With regard to your £300k boats - I think I would go for the Princess 42.

In the case of the new T50 - not much between this and Phantom 50. We purchased the P50 because we believe we have got better vaue for money (quality and residuals).

Time will tell.

I agree and I hate it. When I specified my S37 I said no birds eye and it was replaced with a rather nice brush aluminium look at no extra cost. I guess someone likes it or do we assume that we have to put up with it.

Re: leopardskin

Doug,
I don't believe you are still waiting. I thought that they had sorted out their customer care issues. Glad I did'nt buy the T50 now.

I have had various small problems with the P50...
Water in engine bilge - sorted
Broken transom gate lock - sorted
Hob not working - sorted
Water gauge - sorted
Only items outstanding are with RayMarine & Eberspacher.

Many thanks to Fairline Wales at Deganwy and in particular Adrian Smith who constantly calls me with updates.

Re: leopardskin

Mick
Its now come down to admitting a design fault which to be fair they are trying to correct. its just taken a long time.
And i still have a leaky D3 engine
I am almost scared to take her out in case i find something else. It doesnt go wropng sitting on the pontoon /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: leopardskin

Is this design fault on current production as well Dougie? Some potential buyers may find it useful or don't Sealine want it publishing?

Re: leopardskin

Its on the S29
The side canopies dont stop water getting into cockpit.
Currently trying corrections in factory. then hopefully on mine another forumites and a dealers boat (which has been sold subject to correcting the leaks)
will keep you posted on what they do.
