Sealine 328 and AD41\'s

Further to my earlier post, my mate is getting very serious about signing up for his first boat..a Sealine 328 with AD41's. He has heard some bad things about Ad41's smoking etc..so, does anyone have any hands on advice they could him about either the boat or the engines. (I have always had great reports back about 328's). Thanks.

Re: Sealine 328 and AD41\'s

As hlb isn't about at the mo, if they are the 200hp engine they're the same as his. Although he never admits it they do smoke on start up but it quickly clears. The main problem he's had is with the gearboxes, now on his 3rd set, so those should be carefully checked, I think from memory they uprated them. Maybe check with Volvo and local service agents.

Probably best to PM hlb for more info.

Re: Sealine 328 and AD41\'s

I have a Sealine 365 with AD41s and have had no seious problems with them except a bit smokey on start up, especially if left unused (or lightly used) for a while- but this is common to a lot of diesels - this is my second Sealine with these engines. I do about 250 hours per year.

No. Only on second set on this boat. Gearbox originally fitted, crap. Cant remember the model no. Nothing much wrong with the engines that a good pair of Cummins would not cure./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif Smoke yes, but a bit of Soltron soon solves that. PM me if want some.

Re: Sealine 328 and AD41\'s

Friend of mine has been looking at boats with the 200hp VP's and was told, right or wrong, that the MS3 gearbox is prone to problems whilst the MS 4, which came later is fine. Break point seems to be around 1990.
Beware, if the boat has been used on inland waters with low speed restrictions.
Otherwise, I believe a nice combination.

Re: Sealine 328 and AD41\'s

Aren't the gearbox problems only on shaft drive installations, gearbox is in the outdrive on a 328 so not a consideration.

Re: Sealine 328 and AD41\'s

if buying an older boat, check the outdrive rams are the modified type. most have been changed because they would not have lasted this long...

Yes they smoke on start up, but ok after a while.

The smoke reducing things are a waste of time. don't waste money on getting them repaired if they don't work.

Re:proper engines

Bit of smoke indicates you have some proper machinary downstairs, not some unreliable tat that runs on lighter fuel/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: Sealine 328 and AD41\'s

Engines are pretty much bullet proof if looked after. They do smoke on start up, but that can be reduced by using Soltron.

Re: Sealine 328 and AD41\'s

Volvo made the 41s in various guises. The 41As did smoke a bit on start. Watch out for the 41B though. Volvo had the wonderful idea of using solid copper pipe with sealing o-rings instead of flexible hose and hose-clamps. I had a boat with these and they coroded and leaked all over the place.

Re: Sealine 328 and AD41\'s

Tell your mate to learn to Apologise to all around him, When starting up the 41a as it tends to smoke a bit. But he could not have a better engine, a very fine work horse.Very robust, good on fuel.
