Hi All

Apologies if i have posted this in the wrong section.

I have a Sealine 190, basics are, it wouldn't start, so we replaced the Alternator, cap, rotor arm still no spark, turned over ok, but no spark.

Got it down to the ignition coil and then to the 8 terminal module, it's this that we need to replace, but i have had more luck finding Lord Lucan, one appeared in the US but that has gone, so my question to you all, we want to bypass the module and stick an electronic ignition conversion kit, but how the hell do i know what one to buy, the engine is an AQ171C 2.3L Petrol

If anyone has any info, i would be eternally grateful for some, this has been an arduous last 3 months.

Thank you.

Hi and welcome,
I feel your pain.. I have twin AQ171c’s and even some of the basic parts are getting very rare, the auction sites can be your friend.
Without wishing to cast aspersions... Are you sure it’s the Renix Module? You can download the workshop manual and that gives a fairly good test procedure on the module with a voltmeter. Do you have 12volts (9.5v minimum) on the 3 wire plug? This is with the plug removed and 12volts on the purple wire and ground (black).
I believe the Module is unique because this engine uses a specially machined flywheel and a magnetic induction position sender. But our American cousins may have better knowledge regarding Electronic Ignition for these engines. You could try marineengine.com on the Volvo Penta forum.
There was some discussion a while back regarding fitting the car equivalent but I do not know how successful that was.
Where are you based out of interest?

I am in Reading and the boat is moored at Thames and Kennet Marina.

We've fully tested the coil, module, everything, it's definitely the module, we bought old car ones off ebay from around the same time, nothing has 8 terminals, so i'm looking to bypass that now and fit an electronic ignition kit, as this is more likely to start it than wait for a module to appear on Ebay.
