Having bit the bullet and bought a new lewmar hatch iv been reading the Lewmar fitting guide which keeps mentioning bedding compound and silicon , I'm thinking of using Dow Corning silicon sealant to bed the new hatch onto ,what do others use please ?

Not silicon. Use either a polysulphide such as Arbromast or Boat Life or a polyurethane such as Sikaflex or CT1.

+1 for CT1 which is actually a modified silicone. I have used it exclusively for the last few years, including on skin fittings and as a teak deck caulking compound (on cockpit locker lids), and it is very good, also cheaper and easier to use than sikaflex. And if properly resealed it lasts well once opened!
