Given the massive price hike in the cost of the new (and untried) version of Micron, I thought I would try Seajet Shogun 033 this year. Has anybody made this change and what did you do before apply the 033? The Seajet website recommends light wet sanding followed by a washdown; we usually go over the hull with one of those heavy duty green scourers after it has been pressure washed. Do the Forumites think this is this likely to be adequate?

I've got on well with shogun 033 for several years. First applied it over an international product with preparation exactly as you suggest with no problems at all.

I have always just slapped it on whatever was on before. Only prep a good power washing. This year Bruce himself in Bruces yard in Portugal wielded the beast, I had to temper his enthusiasm, it was taking off everything including the badly applied two pack the previous owner had put on 10 years ago!

No particular experience of shogun but I have used Seajet Emporer for a decade now and remain very impressed with it.

I just pressure wash and apply one new coat each year. Never any fouling, just a little dirt. Expensive but good.

A couple of years ago I had half a tin of Shogun 033 Navy and got a good price on some Micron Extra Navy. One side of hull done in each. One well thinned coat overall and a second also thinned coat round waterline. No discernable difference on haulout after 9 months. Both performed well in clearly a very high fouling area as evidenced by un-antifouled mooring buoy/chain/pickup rope all of which rapidly get encrusted. On hull no barnacles, some thin slime overall, a few fine strands of weed round waterline, all sorts of stuff including sea squirts on the very bottom of keel where you can't get antifoul on properly onto rusty cast iron in the ten minutes in the slings before launch.

Having half a tin left of last year's Micron Extra and looking at the current price of the new Micron version I'll probably be doing another half-and-half with Shogun next year. I work on a trace over 2.5 litres a year for a 35 ft hull. As I say, I thin it.

I rub over the old AF each year with a mesh sander on a pole, then roll on the AF. The two seem totally compatible.

Reference the massive price hike for International Micron. I was told most of the cost was the type approval testing regime has changed, and each colour has to be done separately, it very expensive. Internationals type approval ran out after the new testing system went live, Hempel managed to do this years A/F approval on the old system. Maybe it was the same for Sea Jet. If its true then perhaps in the future we will see the favorite red and blue at cheaper prices than the other colours.

Why take the chance of problems, rub down and put a tie coat of Jotun Silvergrey 88 primer on (just as good but much cheaper than International Primocon)

Because they do seem to be completely compatible, and

a) I don't want another coat of paint that I don't need - the less paint on the longer the hull stays acceptably smooth for good sailing performance, and

b) I have an unproven suspicion that the layers of previous years' AF, after surface abrasion before the new AF goes on, may still have some residual additional antifouling quality. When boat was new two coats of he most expensive Tiger product did not work well, next year one thin coat of Shogun and another round the waterline worked much better.
