Hurrah! We finally got back to the boat yesterday and got the first coat of antifoul on. At the end of the day we opened the second can to apply a second coat and the paint had ‘separated’ so started stirring but after more than ten minutes of stirring it just resembled a pot of lumpy porridge.

I do have a tin of thinners but I don’t think 5% will cut it.

I’ve never used this 033 seajet af before, is this something common/expected? Will machine stirring it likely to help?

Chris

I used Seajet 033, for many years, never found anything like that, even when using a half can left over from the previous year. If left it does settle out and it is important to stir well each time, but yours sounds as if it is faulty.

Me too, been using it most years since 2006/7, with occasional use of Micron instead. Also often kept part cans year to year with no problem. I always thin a bit and whisk it with drill stirrer, but never had "lumpy porridge".

A few years back I bought 2 cans of Seajet from a local chandler, they were marked down to half price so I knew they were old stock, when we went to apply it it was a solid lump suspended in thinners, set the wife to work with a wooden spoon and after an hour or so it looked like paint so I let her roll it on, when it dried the surface was all tiny lumps of metallic copper. Being a miserable git I took some pics. and complained to the chandler. They referred it me the supplier who called and promised to send me a replacement. The courier turned up in his van ,eyes streaming and hardly able to breathe, I took the leaking tins from him to save him from asphyxiation and called the supplier, they explained that they had found that paint was handled more gently if not over packaged but promised to send on another 5 litres, the nice lady asked me if I could find some safe way to dispose of the paint in the leaky tins, I promised her that I could, I did not need to buy antifouling for about three years.
Your complaint will be effectively dealt with.

Some that I had was quite thick and needed a good stirring. Drill powered whisk is the way ahead.

I've gone over to Micron 350 though. Got two successful years out of 3 coats on the Hamble, with just one proper diver scrub and one quick rub around the waterline.

We just had one pot of Flag (out of 3) that was noticeably lumpy.

Added thinners, lid back on, give it a good shake (music on, HIIT style workout for arms and shoulders for about ten minutes). Open up, bit more thinners and a stir. Seemed to go on OK.

The pot we left nicely warming in the car went on best.

I would have thought a mechanical mixer would fix it but perhaps yours is further gone than ours was.

I've had this exact problem with the same product.... Contact Sea Jet... They replaced mine no quibbles... Which in this day and age is something to be applauded... I've used it ever since and it's great

Regards

Tim

Thanks guys. I will contact them tomorrow. I ended up going out and buying another tin for today as I’m hoping to splash tomorrow so didn’t want to delay things. Hopefully I’ll have one for next time.
