It just dawned on me the other day while walking through the marina, that I frequently see MOBO owners scrubbing all their covers and boats to get seagull crap off, and also spending lots of time rigging nets, CDs, helicopter rotor blades etc as deterrents It struck me that perhaps seagulls just prefer crapping on MOBOs; is it random or is there a reason? Do the gulls just dislike Mobos, or is it something more sinister? I only ever have to wash off the odd splodge and never use any form of deterrent and I never see much crap on other rag tops.

I assume from that, you have a problem with Starlings. At least gulls are easier to hit with an air rifle /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

i also think if I was a bird I'd be scared of starlings.

Yep. Come autumn time the little feathered f*****s will be up in the rigging and crapping for all they're worth.

Let's face it shit happens, especially when there's starlings about!

Seagulls scared of Starlings? Surely seagulls can't possibly be scared of anything! They're proper evil! Only recently, whilst in a certain popular Cornish surfing town, a seagull stole my friend's Pastie from her hands as she lifted it to her mouth!
Maybe MOBO owners have more tempting bits of food.

At the risk of giving a sensible answer... perhaps the rigging is the reason.. scares the blighters off??

.When I had a little mobo on a swinging mooring the Shitehawks used to use the wheelhouse roof as a platform to smash the crustaceans to bits, devour them and recycle them on to the blue cockpit cover. They do like blue. Now we are in a Marina with a bit bigger mobo which has a total blue cloth cover no problem.Yotties either side of me they (the Shitehawks ) definateley don,t like frigging in the rigging ,.,.,or the yotties! Only joking God bless em! .I think Tomsk,s sensible answer is right. What,s a crustacean? A Pakistani run over by a bus! Hey i,m a white honkie with a takeaway Pizza place bl**dy h*ll Dont the shaded brothers tae the p*ss out of me! Good fun though.

not just starlings

... there's a whole host of other cute little feathered buggers that bloat themselves on blackberries, then jettison their waste before emigrating to Africa. Swallows and martins for instance, and you can get an awful lot of them along the spreaders and other bits of rigging. And they are attracted by the shiney CDs and flapping carrier bags, 'cos that means they are safe from the gulls. You can't win.
At least the cormorant has decided to pick on someone else in our creek this year.

Re: not just starlings

Just before I moved into Chi Marina this Spring, the f------s started leavin complete fish skeletons scales and other associated poo on the deck. I had only just got rid of the blackberry stains from the Autumn, enough to make me think about stopping the RSPB sub and buying another 12 bore.

The trouble with the old 12-bore is that it makes a helluva mess of the tricolour. A pet eagle is probably more efficient. Maybe you could persuade the marina staff to take up hawking?
