I have fitted a Seagull 1V water filter with a suitable pump however the water just comes out in little spurts rather than in a constant flow ! Strangely, when the battery power is low the flow improves to being constant so I am at the stage where I have no idea as to how to cure the problem. Any wise old souls out there that can point me in the right direction ?

The pump is Jabsco ParMax 2.9 12v Pressure Controlled Par Max Fresh Water Pump. 11L/min

The pump capacity is considerably greater than the Seagull flowrate . Presumably You do not have a accumulator tank becaue the blurb for the pump says it does not need one

I think your problem maybe that the output of the pump compared with the flow though the Seagull Filter is so great that It will not in fact operate smoothly without an accumulator

Thre appear tb two versions of the Par Max 2.9. One operating at 15 to 25 psi and one operating at 20 to 40 psi. I dont know if its relevant but which do you have?

You post implies that you have fitted the pump specifically for the Seagull filter. Why did you not Tee off the existing system, or is it not a pressurised system

on my previous boat I had a Seagull filter and an accumulator in the water sytem. The only problem I ever experienced was getting a replacement filter cartridge, finding a replacement it was about as difficult as finding an honest politician.

Personally, I find Seagull is overrated and over priced by about 5 times. Water treatment, like computers, has come down in price and been re-designed. Seagull missed the bus.

Try Pentec Floplus 10 or Daulton Ultracarb.

Even simpler and just as effective is a pair of standard see through 10” filter housings with a 1micron pre-filter followed by a carbon block filter. The 1 micron filter protects the carbon block from sediment and extends the life. Very cheap filters to buy anywhere in the world. You can see if the filters need changing. We swapped from over priced Jabsco filters to this system several years ago. As liveaboards we use a lot of water and the water filters you buy from Seagull, Jabsco, etc just cost too much and dont last long enough. They have too little surface area. The Seagull filter would last us less than three months.

I specified Floplus 10 and Ultracarb BECAUSE they are high performance, economical filters that fit the standard 10" housings you refferenced. Exactly your point.

Thanks for that Vic. I assume that I need either a lower flow rate pump of an accumulator tank ?

Yes that is basically what I was thinking although I am not so sure you will find a pressure controlled pump with a low enough capacity to give a smooth flow on its own.

A small accumulator tank , even a 2 litre one , might smooth out the operation to an acceptable level.

My situation is that I already have the Seagull filter so Vics suggestion of an expansion tank seems the way to go. Thanks all.
Vic actually referred to an accumulator tank. This is splitting hairs somewhat, as they are the same device, but used differently. An accumulator tank has the pressure set slightly below the cut-in pressure of your pump, while an expansion tank has the pressure set slightly above the cut-out pressure. There's a useful comparison of the two functions at https://www.jabscoshop.com/files/Accumulator and Expansion Tank Instructions ZPWL4 doc595.pdf.

With a small accumulator fitted I had absolutely no problems with my Seagull Mk IV over many years. A good piece of kit.

Actually, you point out an important distinction, and I misspoke myself (as an engineer that has installed both). Accumulator.
