Seagull Repeller

Two rows of fishing line from bow and up to radar arch. Nothing attached and difficult to see... Seagulls approach, then at last minute notices, veers off uncertain feeling unsafe ... does not approach again ... looks strange and a bit funny, but our boat was clean through the winter and up to end of June when I removed it for our vacation... ("towards NW Scotland")

My labrador is far more effective - is normally a soppy lump but has a patholgical hatred of anything with wings or sails. Attacks gulls with gusto and always growls at raggies. Seems to be the flappy noise of the sails he dislikes up above him. . . . /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would say that was learnt behaviour! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Sadly not - he used to bark at the sails on my 505 back when I thought sailing was proper boating. . . . /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Now I'm sure they have one of these down at Sovereign harbour near the lifeboat station as I was heading out one had and suddenly heard an awful screaching!

My first thought was a seagul had gone and got stuck under the boat as it was really difficult to pinpoint the sound, then I thought something was wrong with the outdrive!

In the end it stopped and I carried on. It was only a few weeks later when waiting for a lockin and I was drifting by the lifeboat station that it started up again and I managed to pinpoint the sound.

This sonic (audible) repeller uses birds' own distress calls to create a "danger zone" - it frightens infesting bird pests away for good.

Distress call? More like murder call! It really was a shocking sound!

Not tried the proper kit, but used to live in a marina and the seagulls got rather annoying at times - particularly dive-bombing ducklings etc. A recording of a seagull distress call certainly frightened them off. They'd circle looking for which of their mates was suffering a horrible death and, when they couldn't see anything, flew off.
If played regularly it would probably lead to neighbours inflicting a horrible death on you as it is a nasty sound.

Bloody hell......you would need to have spent £400+ to get a good system....how about one of those plastic owls?

A few boats in our Marina had lots old CD's/DVD's fastened to fishing line and then fixed between masts, I think the theory was that the mirror surfaces flashed in the sun and also reflected the birds image back at them which was supposed to scare em off. Don't think it was very succesful.

Have done exactly the same for several years now, really does work! Much better than cds, flappy plastic bits or plastic owls.

The best way to keep the seagulls from your home, hotels or boat is prevention. If you already have seagull problems, then to invest in some sort of bird control system. The most famous and more effective bird control called ultrasonic bird repellent. If you are unable to do the work yourself, then contact a local bird control company to help.

Sorry folks but ....

I hadn't seen this thread when I posted this month's "What Now".
But as they cover the same topic (and as the response to this month's What Now has been -- frankly - pretty disappointing) I'd like to use the posts in this thread as WNS replies.

Any objections, please PM me -- preferably by 14:00 tomorrow (Friday)

Thanks.
Tim

I had noticed that it is not exactly fresh guano. But who cares: I'm sure the essential nature of birdshit hasn't changed in that time!

If anyone, I think the free subscription should go to a Mr Hugo Andreae for pointing this thread out to me. Somehow, though, I don't think he'll be taking me up on that offer :D

A chap moored near me has cd's on a fishing line, looks very colourfull when the sun catches them, no idea if it works though.
