G'day all,.... I have a very old Seagull outboard ...don't know what model,it is a small hp short shaft type. I hadn't used it for about 10 years and dug it out this morning to have a look at it. After filling it with fresh petrol,it started on the second pull.The only problen is that the fuel on/off tap is leaking all over the joint.I stripped it down to find the rubber (?) sleeve which makes the seal has perished . The make of the fuel tap is "Ewart" .Are replacement sleeves available? or has anyone any ideas on the best way to fix said tap?. Obviously a small length of rubber tubing would do the trick,but I have looked all over for a piece the correct size.

Try a Classic Motorcycle shop, they used Ewart type seals. If not, they are not horribly expensive because everyone uses them on old motorcycles.
Nice to hear it started though - its always a satisfying feeling.

If you cannot get a correct seal, don't try other types of rubber as the petrol could disolve it and give you more problems. I have temporarily fixed these taps with PTFE tape used in plumbing. Just keep wrapping it around until it fits tightly into the cylinder.

They have distinctive sound, leave a tel-tale wake, at some time on their life have 'flicked' starting cord into someones face etc., BUT ..... they live on ..... dunk 'em, chuck 'em, abue 'em ...... they come back for more.

No matter what you do with a Seagull - flat out 3 knots ! Thats the old ones of course - not the newer fancy 21st century Kingfisher style ...

The fuel taps on the Seagull engines I have (Both about 30 years old) have cork sleeves. Two or three years ago I was able to get new corks from my local chandler/ outboard service centre.

The corks tend to dry out and shrink with age but you can rejuvenate then by immersing in boiling water for a few minutes.
