I have just been given an engine which they previous owner had split into 2 to remove the impellor. he believed that this was worn, but examination of the rest of the engine shows that overheating was the result of clogged waterways.

anyway, I now want to re-assemble but cannot work out whether there is a plate missing where the leg was split for the impellor. there is a recess in the top part which is where the impellor fits but what stops the impellor sliding down the square tube into the bottom part? surely it cant just be the gasket?

The impellor should be a tight fit on the square tube. The tube should be bigger where the impellor fits. The impellor should never wear as it dose not rub on anythink it should be very close to the gasket but not touch. The gasket is about 3 mm thick and hard like a plate.

You dont tell us what model you have, 40 plus (FP) or Featherweight (FF), or what year it is or what the serial mumber is.

It is possible to find the year from Saving old Seagulls IIRC and from HERE

But yes there should be a joint plate between the exhaust flange and the gear housing
(part no 40/1360 according to my parts list but that dates from 1973)
