I emailed them through their website as I had bought a new CO2 cylinder that came in a huge plastic blister pack that must be six times the size of the item. I said that a marine suppliers they should be aware of the damage to the oceans of plastic and that they would recieve nothing but praise for trying to tackle the scourge.

Their reply:
Thank you for your e-mail and comments regarding our packaging.

As you point out the packaging is intended as a protection and ease of display for the product , it also acts as marketing and advertising for our products for which I am sure you will understand is a vital part of building our brand.

I fully take on board your comment regarding the size of the blister pack and I can confirm we have already taken steps to reduce the size to a more suitable size, this modification will take some time to wash through our dealers stock but all future blister packs will be considerably smaller.

We have already had a board meetings and discussed this issue with a view to proactively minimizing the effects of our packaging on the environment, we have a number of ideas that will go some way to addressing this issue and we will now push forward one idea in particular that will work as follows : All Seago products sold within uk chandleries will have the option when purchased to be removed from the packaging and the packaging left for collection by Seago , and where possible will be reused on new products or recycled.

As a responsible company we are actively looking at other ways to help reduce pollution and landfill.

I hope this goes someway to answering your e-mail and show our commitment to this issue.

Kind Regards,

Well done Seago.
I tried to email E C Smith on a similar basis but their email address doesn't work.

They would seem to be a well intentioned company. I responded to a recall on lifejackets and they sent me a replacement immediately before I sent them the old one back, as that was on the boat. Nice co to deal with also.

I wish the person who invented blister packs could be set the task of opening 10,000 a day with bare hands.

Much more environmentally friendly to put items in cardboard boxes. Takes less room , easy to stack etc.

But well done Seago for making a start!

I was probably the original complainant leading to that recall nearly 10 years ago. I serviced a couple of year old life jackets and found they had deflated slightly overnight. They were very helpful and I had a couple of phone conversations with their MD as they sought to analyse the problem. The recall followed a few weeks later. Good business ethics.

There is no excuse for over packaging something, there were rules brought in years ago to minimise this stuff, I moaned the other day when the wife brought home a turnip wrapped in cellophane, why does it need wrapping? :ambivalence:

Well done Seago

When I was at college in the early 90s there was a Norwegian girl on the course who told me that there had been a campaign against over packaging there - everybody had been encouraged to remove the excess packaging in the shop and leave it behind. The resulting mess and disposal costs meant the retailers had used their power over manufacturers leading to greatly reduced packaging. That was nearly 25 years ago so the backlash here is long overdue.
