I've heard talk of a place at West Mersea, where you take your own bread and wine.



What's it called? Where is it? Would we need to book (hoping to head that way on Saturday)? Where's best to anchor or moor (34 foot catamaran)?

Anywhere that's (even) better?

Googling throws up the Company Shed and The Oyster Bar.

The company shed is the most popular. Up the causeway and it is on the left. The Oyster bar looks rather pretentious, although I have not eaten there.

I don't think you book at either establishment - Sunday is the start of Mersea Week, but mooring should not be a problem, but if you can't find a mooring, ask WMYC boatman

The Company Shed. Great. They give odd tumblers for your wine and unmatching cutlery. The seafood platters are great plus any extras like oysters. BUT you can't book. Turn up early for lunch and they put your name on the blackboard and tell you how long it will be. Wander down to WMYC for a pint. The first time we waited an hour but the last time we got the last table straight away. Closed Monday.

When you get to Mersea call up YC1 on channel 37 or 07752 309 435 and the launch will tell where there's a spare buoy and sometimes lead to you to it. They charge for a lift ashore and back but you can use your own dinghy and tie it up on the all tide landing. If they say that are are only the piles free then watch out as the current is diagonal across them and is a bit tricky. The scuffs came off eventually!

Don't go during Mersea week as there will be no free buoys.

The Oyster bar is excellent and far from pretentious.

I highly recommend it and IMO it's much better than the Company Shed. Part of the Company sheds charm is the somewhat basic facilities, the battle for a table and the sometimes chaotic service. However, I'd rather not have that when I eat out.

It's advised to book a table as it gets very, very busy due to it's popularity.

I've been there a few times now with the family for our pre-sailing/launch/end of season meal and it's consistently good. Friendly staff and not too pricey considering the quality.

I've no connection with the place just a very happy customer.
 
Lunched at the Oysterbar this week - good value food, excellent service and great views from our outside table, fitted with a parasol to keep the excessive heat of the sun off our necks.

The Launchmen are desperately looking for moorings this year. The weather has stopped a lot of regulars going away for protracted trips, so there aren't a lot free... I'm calling up from Bench Head on my return Monday...
