Amongst the other bits and bobs that came with the 1912 Yawl I'm restoring is a Seafarer 701 sounder. Putting a set of batteries in the back proved that the unit is working. However I've no paperwork (manual) to help me. Does anyone have a manual that I can copy? Also, eventually, I'd like add a repeater of some sort in the cockpit; any suggestions about that?
Thanks

I think I may have one in the garage - but sadly no manual. From memory the transducer has to be fitted with no air voids between the front face of the transducer and the seawater, so this was an oil filled tube glassed -in vertically on the top of the inside of the hull, or fed in from outside into a wooden fairing block so that the transducer made direct contact with the water.

As for repeaters, I remember them being mounted on a swing bracket in the cockpit or flush mounted.

Big drawback as they are quite bulky, but they have one great advantage over a digital readout - you can tell the bottom quality by the nature of the little red dots.

The tranducer is still fitted and has a coax cable running up into the cabin. She's been out of the water for 7 years so I can't test whether it's working or not - just hope! I've seen a picture of a repeater which was a neat little LCD screen in a 'usual' small black plastic unit but couldn't make out any name on it.

Even if you're ashore you should get a weak return from your transducer, paticularly if you put something fairly flat and solid on the ground beneath it. If I remember correctly your reading will be about 4x what you would get in water. You will have to play with the gain control a bit to detect the echo. You could also check the transducer by listening for the clicks outside the boat, usually weak but detectable.

Seafarer did a cockpit repeater for its later models. I had one fitted to a 501. If you check inside your box there should be a terminal block for 4(?) wires. You should find that you can also connect to 12v ships supply rather than use batteries (if you wish).

I think the 701 was a rotating type.
I found this on a Google search - http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/view/F160522
which is definitely a rotating one.
So don't think you'll get a repeater for it.

Ron

PS. I still use a rotating type as I like the more graphic display of the bottom and any other stuff that gets in between.
Pity someone can't make one with a ring of LEDs that are scanned on a 'rotating' basis that would give the same type of display but without the motor/noise/depth of case/etc.

You definitely can use a repeater with a rotating Seafarer, I have a Seafarer 5, which I think is the predecessor of the 501, and I have a Seafarer cockpit repeater which works.
The 701 is presumably even later so should be able to connect.
I am replacing the instruments this Autumn, so the repeater would be available.
It is not in the best of health in that the glass has a crack and is a bit fogged, but it works and you can see the digits!
If you would like it PM me and I will arrange to get it to you when it has been removed. No guarantees though /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have a repeater which worked OK until the main unit packed up last year. I used it with a 901 but I think the bloke I got it off 5 years ago had it on a 701. PM me if you have any interest in it.

Seafarer certainly did a repeater for all their LED sounders ... in fact it's the same one.

You should have a terminal block that allows you to choose 12V ships supply or battery ... also have terminals to connect the repeater.

You would probably have to scour the Boat Jumbles or contact someone like Surplus Marine ... it's an obselete item and long gone from any shelves.

Do you still have the repeater available? I would be very interested in buying it fir my 700 seafarer. Many thanks

Porteous,

Not sure if you still want a repeater, I did PM you to say that mine, although a bit scruffy, is available. It was working fine when the boat came ashore for the winter.
Has now been removed and I have it at home, please get in touch if interested.

I will hang onto it for a while, but it will eventually get binned as I have far too much old stuff kept - just in case.
