Want to sevice seacocks before launch.

One skin fitting is a little loose and should be fixed to the hull again. What shoudl be used here? Marine grade silicone sealant.

Can I use regular maring grease in the Blakes sea cocks?

Thanks in Advance

There is a special Blakes Seacock Grease, it appears quite expensive for the small tub, but will last a lifetime as they say. I suspect it is just an ordinary high grade WATERPROOF grease. But for teh sake of saving a couple of quid by experimenting with something else you may as well buy it.

Yep, I'd go for the Blakes sruff too. I small tub will last you many seasons even if, as we do, it's used on a host of other things aboard e.g. our Volvo stern gland.

It does have the advantage of not solidifying when in contact with salt water but remaining soft and effective. Well worth the few extra pence IMHO.

I'm considering buying a tub of Ramasol, (sp?), for the sterngland and other greasing points.

Would Blakes be better? What's the full name?

Cheers

Richard

Castrol have a wide range of marine greases for applications in the Marine and Offshore Industries where severe
operating conditions necessitate an improvement over standard greases.

Long term stability with no premature hardening.
High drop point
Excellent protection against corrosion.
High resistance to sea water wash off.
Strong adhesion to surfaces
A lubricant which is solvent free containing no heavy metals or harmful constituents.

Yes, I declare an interest. We use their products a lot offshore, but I do not personally pay for them ! ( Deo gratia ! )

I have always just used castrol LM or CL which was left over from when cars had grease points. It does harden eventually, but then I usually try to remember to remove the cones and grease them every two years.

Regarding a sealant for underwater, I am told that silicon is not as good as polysulphide. I think the latter is called "boatlife" or something. Again, before all these were available, linseed oil putty, boss white or sealstic mastic was used. Do not use acrylic sealant however, only an oil-based mastic will do if you use older technology.

Definitely not silicone.......... not for underwater use. You want a polyurethane sealant which is moisture cured. Most common is Sikaflex but expensive.

I use a teflon based waterproof grease which is available from cycle shops (used for lubricating cycle chains). Keeps the seacocks free and doesn't allow water in, perfect!
