Seacock replacement--doddle?

I can see the attraction as an emergency device, but my seacocks are simply too tight to undo without firmly (no very firmly) holding the skin fitting.

Like the idea though. But then again assuming you are doing this because the valve has seized open, so you've got to remove the pipe that is preventing the free flow of a lot of water, then get the thing inserted through a substantial gush, or panic and get the hose back on quick.

Not the sort of job to get distracted from part way through - wonder if the insurance would cover leaving this thing in place whilst you nipped off for a pint !

v.funny and pointless also imho!

once you're at the stage of replacing something, as jfm said you got to do both and trust me it wont be as simple as undoing nicely the seacock, probably involves a can of wd40, lots of swearing and finally an angle grinder. Now, you cannot do that in the water no matter what nigel says :p

not to mention that if the hull is not grp, you need to dry, check, clean, sand, treat with epoxy or whatever and then assemble.

just go plastic, that's what I've done and I doubt I'll have to worry about them going carroty anytime :D

The chap in the video only changed the valve and not the valve and the skin fitting. They are both probably the same age and probably both brass so probably both need changing.

Sometimes you think the valve is operating as the handle moves but the ball is stuck, he would have got a surprise?

If you have on ropey valve and all are the same age and brass probably a good idea to change all on the boat underwater.

Inlight of the recent insurance threads Re " water ingress" from fizzed seacocks = large claim Vs exclusions
Has any one been brave enough to attempt this -using one of these ?

I have done that afloat when my engine gate valve gave up after an idiot overtightened it & stripped a weak spindle thread. all i used was a softwood bung & had very little water o/b. i had all items to hand before i started
