The helpful responses have led me to decide I need a new seacock. Is there a recommended type?

Blakes without a doubt. We had other types on our previous boat and replaced them with regular monotony. The ones on our current boat had not been moved for years when we bought it, and had seized, but they are strong and simple and can be brought back from the (apparently) dead relatively easily. The latest models have a grease nipple so servicing is easy. They'll outlast you...

If you can afford it use Blakes seacocks - otherwise BRONZE bodied ball valves on bronze/gunmetal hull outlets. Make sure they are Bronze ball valves - there are an awfully lot of cheap brass bodied ones around, often in chandleries.....
DON'T use any gate valves....
