Hi

Does anyone actual use the above software on a day-to-day basis?

Or do you know of a better application (even for a few quid?)

They've tried out all the packages, and compared them. Some of the authors of the packages also look in there

Your first decision on buying a chart product, is what charts you want to use.

If you have the fianance, the vector charts are much better than pictures of charts. They are also much easier to update. My personal favourite is C-Map. I consider this to be the most up-to date, accurate and clear chart system.

Having decided on the chart system, it is then much easier to decide on the software. If going Vector, my recommendation is Winchart Nexus <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.chartwork.com/>http://www.chartwork.com/</A>. See it at the show.

If you are happy with Raster, then ARCS charts will have their own viewer soon, but you will need to renew your subscription every year. Maptech (or Maxsea) seem to be pretty good, but have better charts of North American waters than UK

Clearing up ....

Maptech is NOT same as Maxsea ... which are completely different ball games.
Maptech is limited to Maptech bsb / kap charts basically and Maxsea will read a much wider range including ARCs, Vector etc.

As regards Seaclear - this reads bsb / kap and various formats making it VERY good value ..... even if it had a price tag .... which it doesn't being Freeware. It is NOT overloaded with unused extras, it runs on simple pc's and carries out a very good jopb accepting nearly all NMEA signals thrown at it.

Just because other packages have price tags and fancy blurb / advertising doesn't mean that a freeware is no good !!!

Ta All

I've signed up to the above group, just waiting to hear back. I think the basic problem is that with shareware such as SeaClear, the software is only as good as the quality of the maps you can scan in, which I must admit, wasn't bad for a first go.

Are these vector charts expensive and wide-ranging?

Signed up ? Scanned ...

Seaclear accepts BSB and KAP files as well. These are commercial charts and I'm told available via various p2p such as Kazaa or Shareaza ........

If you signed up ....... I would have accepted - so you must be in !!! Post a question on the group and see what comes up ...

And indeed I am!

So if you were to look for such files on Kazaa.. would would you be searching for. (As an experiment, of course, as I'm sure such actions would be verging on the wrong side of the law ;)

Re: Signed up ? Scanned ...

Based on what has been passed to me :

Kazaa .... it has Spyware embedded in it and fails to run when 'blocked or deleted'.

Shareaza is the one that has no Spyware built in - so they say.

Various info was made available by various around the world on the web - that such enries as : emaps maptech etc. entered into search bar of Shareaza would yield results .....

But this I declare - I accept no responsibility for use of the above information given in good faith and not for the purpose of contravening any Copyright Laws.
