sea water in engine

Have just fitted a new D1.30 Volvo Penta into myColvic Watson 23ft motor sailor. The engine and vetus water lock are below the water line. After running the engine twice, on each occasion sea water entered the engine, so fitted a new water intake with a longer loop extending above the water line. This resolved the initial problem but am concerned that this may not be the permanent answer.
What would be the best solution.

1. Syphon break at top of the loop (which extends above the waterline) twix seacock and pump.
2. Water lock below engine manifold
3. Gooseneck fitting at transom

The syphon break should be at least 16 inches above the water line.

On my boat the loop and syphon break is between the engine cooling outlet and exhaust injection point. Would have thought a syphon break on the suction side of seawater pump would cause air to enter cooling system.

Hi Mike,

I have just replace an anti-siphon valve on my boat. With a pretty solid brass/bronze looking one from these guys:

it fits on the hose between the seawater outlet from the engine and the exhaust water injection. you may need to extend the hose to form a gooseneck above the waterline with this at the apex.
