put a decent suit on (pair of shoes normally enough) & saunter round liverpool docks or yates wine lodge. should'nt be long before experiencing gbh survival course with a dunking in the sea afterwards .........

It might be worth checking out Fleetwood Nautical college, They train folks for the offshore gas rigs, I believe they have to do the course before allowed onto rigs.
I regularly watch them in the river practicing MOB ect.

I would highly recommend Fleetwood Nautical College. I did the course there, with SWMBO, last Feb – great fun. Well worth doing, changed our attitude to a few things!

The Morning was theory; afternoon practical in the purpose built survival centre. The survival centre simulated most things, apart from cold shock. This included a 2m wave machine, helicopter lift, etc. At the end of the course you are put through the full drill of abandoning ship and final helicopter rescue – all in the dark with waves, smoke and pyros for full effect.

Most courses are geared up for Merchant Navy/ Cruise ship deck cert.s, but they tailor the course for yachties and the RYA ticket (for YM commercial endorsement).

Cost about £110 each.

Fleetwood's definitely the place. A few years ago a crowd of Fastnet wannabees from Liverpool Yacht Club went there as part of their training. They came back delighted AND wrote a very positive article for the LYC magazine.

I have done offshore survival courses, awarding tickets for work on oil installations, at Aberdeen and Fleetwood. Both were very professional and of similar standard. Of the two I preferred the Fleetwood one for 'user friendliness'. Where they really scored for me was that we were allowed to fire off pyrotechnics, not the case in Aberdeen when I did it, a long time ago.

All the accounts that I hear of the Fleetwood courses aimed at the leisure market are very positive.
