Sea Side Rescue

Send them back to school

To save them from getting "Mown- Down"

[/grumpy old git on]

Well, what a load of wooses. "Oh, we left Port Solent at 11 and we've been out here for 20 hours".

FFS, they were three up, it was blowing about a 6 maybe 7, they had lost their engine but so what? They were in a 35ft+ boat, at the very least they could have heaved to and waited for the weather to abate.

Where's the sense of self-sufficiency, I was ashamed to see that the lifeboat had been called out for such a trivial reason.

[/grumpy old git off, for the minute]

Saw the programme and what I didn't quite understand was that if they left port solent at 11.00pm and the "rescue" was in daylight and they were still in the shipping lane......westbound from the way the boat was heading, what had they been up to for 10 hours they had been out (assuming it took 10 hours to get back to Brixham = 20 hours at sea they said. Also, they got into Brixham in the daylight. Am I missing somwthing

I didn't see this programme but isn't this very indicative of the attitude some people have.
I know we were brought up "to die like Gentlemen" but that article in the Yachting Monthly a couple of months back made me cringe.the chap's engine failed in his yacht so as the tide was against him near Cherbourg, called out the lifeboat.Returning to the IOW a squall hit him, which by all accounts lasted about 30 minutes and what do he do? call out the lifeboat again!I thought there would be a flood of letters saying what a wally he was but no,complete silence
It won't be long before the H&S make us all take exams, register etcPerhaps aptitude should be included, don't misunderstand me we all get nervous at times but just remember Des Sleightholme sitting on the goodwins

This from the Torbay Lifeboat site:-

Incident Date 09-Aug-08
Ready for Service 09-Aug-08

Launch Instruct 18:39
Ready for Service Time 20:31

Launch Time 18:45

All Weather Boat (AWB)
2008 Shout Number 28

Coxswain
Richard Fowler
Mechanic Mat Tyler

Location of Casualty 7 miles SSE of Berry Head

Service The yacht 'Dream Catcher' had been struggling in terrible weather conditions trying to get to

Dartmouth. Their engine had failed and they became exhausted. The ALB was tasked and

escorted them back to Brixham where they were assisted to a berth.

That close to Berry Head in a SW wind "Bugger Dartmouth and bear away for Brixham" looks like a no-brainer. Letting the whole crew get too tired seems to be the real problem.

No. They launched at 18:45 six minutes after the instruction. "Ready for Service" always used to read "Refueled, Rehoused/Moored, and Ready for Service". So basically it was all over for the lifeboat in just under 2 hours.

It's only television gentlemen. Let's not take it too seriously.

I know someone whose rescue was the subect of one of these a couple of years ago and his version of events was very different to that portrayed on screen. When I watched the programme again with a more critical eye I could quite see how the editing had put a particular spin on the rescue without actually telling any lies.

PS - I didn't see this episode.

Quite. There are a lot of "official safety messages" that are required to be promoted on these programmes.

That and create the illusion that whatever happens you will be rescued within 5 minutes.

BTW: anyone notice that the fishermen on the trawler with steering gear breakdown weren't wearing lifejackets.:eek:
Don't they realise what a dangerous place the sea can be?
:p

It's all propaganda to ensure the public believe that the powers that be do a jolly fine job and are well worth their tax monies and that stupid people who go to sea in boats should stop it.

It's all to pave the way(gradually) for greater regulation, taxation and general government interference.

Rather than pass judgement or castigate I wil simply state that there are clearly lessons tho be taken from the incident for all concerned and those of us who watched the programme. Principle amogst them, and in the words of Clint Eastwood,

"..a man has got to know his limitations."

A fair point. However, we've all scared ourselves at sea (well if you are doing it seriously) and lived to tell the tale.

Perhaps the point is that peeps now go to sea without considering the possibilities of it all going wrong and how to get out of it.

[/not quite so grumpy other than with the weather which has gone to rat****, again]

Thats nothing. A few episodes ago they used a helicopter to rescue a dog for *****s sake. For the fuel used you could have bought a dozen new pedigree mutts not to mention the freebies from the rescue kennels.

It's time the RNLI etc started charging.

P.S. And I'd class myself as a dog lover, having had 4 so far and having cried my eyes out when the last one had to be put down.

However, we were impressed with the cow lift...

Had me shouting at the TV! What about splitting down into watches and one getting some rest in rotation, heaving too or changing destination perhaps!

SWMBO took the dog out for a walk!:D
