Do ignition switches fail ? I have a 4 year old 220 Sun Sport .

Sometimes when you turn the key the ignition is dead. If you turn it left the radio works ok. I've checked all the wires, the fuses and the fuse block itself and can find nothing wrong. This leaves me to think the problem may be with the switch itself.

If anyone can suggest anything else I should check before replacing the switch I would really appreciate it. Not very keen to take the boat to sea until I track down this problem. I did think , as a last resort, I could 'hot wire' at the back of the switch !

Thanks.

I've somehow wandered into the MoBo section for which I apologise. I shall leave immediately /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Yes they can fail. I had a 2001 Sea Ray 215 and the switch started to behave exactly like yours.

Didn't want to take a chance ...got a replacement form Marine Marbella on The Hamble.

Had a similar problem on my 215 and, after a bit of fiddling, it turned out to be the connection at the starter motor, which I'd dislodged a gnat's (and only a gnat's)when checking the oil.

...but you've checked the wires..........

They certainly do fail as you described, the switch on my 6year old Trophy did not function first time every time but usually worked if turned again. A replacement switch (about £20 ) gave an immediate cure.
