A friend of mine owns one and goes all over the blimmin place in it with his wife. He was a sailor but caught the motor bug, and now nothing seems to stop him. He doesn't seem to do less that 100nm each trip, and he has had no problems. Nice boat and with a single diesel, its cheap to run.
Not the same model but a friend has a 290 sundancer. I had a good mooch round it last week and they seem to be very good quality. It's for sale if you're interested?
Some older searays used to have some quality issues, like badly installed tanks, shabby wiring, and poor fiberglass work. Newer ones are much better, and are very well made.
Engines are the main thing to look at, as with most boats!
A good surveyor would be able to pick up anything that needs doing, as with any boat purchase.
Single diesel will make most sense. Single 7.4ltr petrol or twin petrol could be expensive to run depending on expected usage. If imported from US make sure it has all paperwork (CE,VAT etc). UK 240v model is preferable.
Had a 1991 270, which a year later they named the 290. Kept ours for three years on a lake and used it almost weekly summer and winter. 7.4l petrol was thirsty, but this is America!! Never had a problem with the boat. Bought our present 370 in 1994. Now we have 2x7.4l and VERY thirsty! Still going strong after 1400hr. Highly recommended.
Thanks for your response. I'm looking at a twin 4.3 litre petrol boat at the moment which I realise is going to be thirsty and as you point out, quite how thirsty depends on usage. That said, I can't seem to find any data on fuel consumption. Any ideas?
I have a 2001 260 which is 28' LOA. Single 5.0 Merc. Uses tons of fuel, but like you, i was prepared. Trip from Poole to Yarmouth IOW costs me between £80 and £100 depending on wind, sea state, speed etc. Could easily be more.
I think that at cruise speed (c.24/25 knots), it'll use about 10 gallons an hour. However, mooching around to the beach and back can do as 'little' as £20-30. Every time I go out I fill 2 jerry cans with land based petrol prices and use a syphon. 40 litres doesn't make much of a dent in a 325 litre tank though!
As for the boat, I love it! Good quality, feels good and solid and just about does my wife and I and our 6 & 4 year old girls.
Lots of detailed info on SeaRay website, inlcuding originial sales spec sheets, full owners manuals etc. PM if you want more details
We have a 315 Sundancer which is basically the same as the older 280 so similar to the 270 you are looking at, ours has a single Volvo KAD44 (and bow thruster). The economy is great about 25 litres per hour (about 5.5gals) at 20knts fully loaded with full tanks etc and about 8 litres per hour (less than 2 Gals) at 6-10knts when creeping around Poole Harour and the like. Fantasitc sea boat, very strong, safe, well built, great fit and finish etc. plus still loads of fun. Buy it and enjoy it.
