Hi all,

Having sailed For the last 8 years and having now collected a wife and 18 month old daughter along the way - the Westerly Centaur has been sold - Now for a Motor Boat. I bought a 4metre Jeanneau Rigiflex with a 30hp on the back for some fun while Ciara was too small to come out but now she "talks" about "de boat", she can spot commercial shipping from several miles (we live in Cork Harbour) so I am now looking for a small family boat - a Sea Ray 220 (93) is for sale nearby so I'm going to take a look at it. Anyone had one of these or a boat with a mercruiser 4.3 inboard?

What kind of thirst can I expect from one of these?

Any other suggestions for what to look at?

I'm thinking of something trailerable, as I have a LWB Jeep, with Hot water/Toilet/Heating (If poss)/ Shower (if Poss)/ second hand - Budget 20,000 to 35,000 Euro

I will be using it in Harbour or a short hop along the Coast in fine weather. Perhaps moving it to the Shannon River for a weeks holiday from time to time.

Failine sprint/ Shetland 4+2 etc?

Thanks,

Jason.

At a rough guess, think in terms of 9 or 10 gallons an hour, or 40-45 litres an hour at a fast cruise.

Someone that actually owns this boat/engine combination should be able to give you a more accurate figure.

may not have the exact model, but boattest.com should give you good clues. Its really the piece of string question. Id guess about 7 galls an hour. Bear in mind,LOTS of time on the boat isnt with the engine running- you get everywhere that much quicker than sail! Average use is 50 hrs a year. All ballpark numbers, but gives you a good idea to annual fuel cost. Do note that going fater than the optimum cruise speed (probably something like 20-25knts) and consumption zooms up massively.
Having a trailer opens your horizons. Theres been posts on this before so try a search. Read up a bit about launch and recovery, or get someone to help, and save yourself some stressful learning curves!

Had the 1992 220OV 4.3 model for over 3 years now, similarly I had a yacht before, Trident 24. funny eh ? Until the speed ban here we used this mainly for waterskiing etc. & never really measured consumption, however I would think 10gals per hr about right, cruising speed 3500 - 4200 rpm giving circa 30+kn.
Make use of the drive trim, very important. If possible get one with trim tabs too to counteract the typical deepvee list in strong cross winds. Good boat in a chop. With only a cuddy cabin (OV model) this might be a bit limiting for extended camping though. (although donkeys ago we camped very happily for years with 2 tots in an 18' sailfish...). Tows fine with a Disco.
Corks a nice area, always a pleasure to be fog bound at the airport ! Happy boating.

sensible choice of boat against the parameters you have set.

as others have said - around 7-10 gph up and running around 1 - 1.5gph at 4-6 knots pottering. If you open it right up it will drink about 16gph but then you won't, will you?!?

Hi Jason

Tried to PM you but your system won't allow it.

At the risk of getting a pasting from the forum (sorry folks!) cos I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do this!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I have got a Fairline Sprint which is currently up for sale.

Have a look here under Callisto and if interested, PM me.

Apologies again to the forum if I have bent the rules

Hi Callisto,

Sorry - yes I have the PM turned off - Being involved in the computer industry has me paranoid about e-mail addresses in the open so I usually turn them off. Especially after joining a yahoo group resulted in numerous offers of various types starting to flood into my private e-mail for the first time in about eight years.

I'll take a look and use the PM for any further chat.

Apologies to all. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Jason.
