So who has seen them or often sees them, looming shapes out of the water, especially when night time sailing? I've been convinced a few times....

My lovely SWMBO did. About 3am off Ushant on a really black night, I had just gone to sleep and she yells SHARKS!!! She said there is a shark alongside us and it's almost as big as the boat what shall I do. I didn't believe her and promptly went back to sleep. SHARKS!!!! she said again and I said something like yea yea with little green men riding them, and went back to sleep. Now on that boat I could sleep and wake occasionally to open an eye and look at the radar which was left with 'plot' on so the tracks of ships showed. I woke and there is the screen, lots of targets but no tracks....I was on deck in seconds. It has gone now she said. 'I knew if I turned the radar 'plot' off you'd get up and look, all those ships have passed clear by the way...'

Next day the talk of the harbour was the huge basking sharks seen the previous night off Ushant....

Then there was the rocks I ran into at night off the Lizard whilst looking for the light marking them (I forget the name) which turned out to be dolphins diving under the bows.

Yes those monster do exist! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: Huge basking charts

Whole place down here in the Antipodes is strewn with broken bits of ships, boats and peeps which have set out from England and fallen off the edge of the world and landed here.

He'd just eaten the Mobo in front of me, hence the smile....

I bet that family I heard about on BBC R4 this morning whose 43 foot schooner was "attacked" by killer whales and sunk within minutes believe in them thar' monsters.

Well close anyway
On my Atlantic trip, after several days and nights

On the night watches I found myself looking out of the corner of my eye as I saw a shape or movement.

I can well understand sailors of old seeing monsters
or mermaids (I shall not tell you about my sighting)

I confess I said a few prayers too.
