ok boat is out i want to take onr toilet out and make it a decent shower room do we leave the gate valve in and just buy a blank for the out end of the valve ,also one of my gate valve handles is very rusty ,do i replace handle or valve ,if so do i go for gate valve or ball valve .HELP

As JFM says Ball valve preferably bronze or at least DZR (de-zincification resistant) brass. A hard cap in the valve outlet should be fine, and leave the fitting available for a future owner to convert back to a loo.

Also exercise the valve at least every month or so.

This is why I don't like gate valves ...

In this day and age Gate valves have no place underwater on a boat in seawater.

Most gate valves are brass which also has no place underwater in a boat at sea.

If you are removing a toilet system the best practice would be to remove the skin fitting and re fibre glass the hole in the hull.

If you are fitting a shower consider a switch on switch off in line Whale Gulper pump rather than a Tupperware box with a float switch and bilge pump in it as the latter are a pile of pox and always require attention.

We have your pile of pox and live aboard for at least a couple of months each year, shower at least once a day, and in 7 years I've had to clean the filter on bilge pump on maybe 3 occasions. Hardly a great chore, so I have to say it works well for us. And I don't have to remember to turn a switch on and off each time I shower.

You know when the shower pump is not turned on when you are showering as the grating floats and your toes disappear under soapy water.

You know when you have finished your shower and forget to turn it off as you have the loud noise similar to a randy bull frog on heat calling out from your shower compartment.
