A couple of the green levers on my sea cocks have some corrosion and I want to replace them before I have one snap when I need to shut them most. Can I just get spare levers?? Or do I have to buy a whole sea cock ??
I would imagine that maintenance of the sea cock is more critical. That is a good handle could snap off fairly easily like corroded handle if the seacock is not easy to turn.
Of course I am not aware how corroded the handles are but a pair of decent pliers or lock jaw type grips may well solve the problem if the handle did snap. olewill
You can get spare handles from a good plumbers merchant. They'll be mild steel again though. A while ago someone mentioned on this forum that SS handles were available from somewhere...
The handles on ball valves fit on to a threaded stud with flattened sides. If stuck remove nut and handle and use correct sized spanner on the flattened stud. You will of course be doing this with the correct sized wooden bung to hand. And a mobile 'phone to hand with the yards number on quick dial. Best to do during business hours!
You should be able to operate your seacocks with one finger. If you cannot, they need lubricated. If you can break your handles, you probably need to replace your neglected seacocks as well.

[/ QUOTE ]With respect, that's a bit harsh? A brand new ball valve can't be operated with one finger. My seacocks aren't neglected and you can't operate them with one finger.
They shouldn't be stuck, but a good quality ball valve is often more than 'one finger' stiff when new and/or in good condition.
Blakes valves are a different matter and ordinary gate valves have no place on the hull of a boat - especially in salt water.
Thanks guys. I never realised how large a range there was, shall get it off and have a close look. The one I am concerned about in particular is the engine raw water. The nature of my boat means that I sail with the sea cock shut. It isn't stiff at all..but the lever does look corroded and starting the engine in a hurry means a quick dive for the sea cock too.. hence my concern.
