The Sea Anchor I described is not for streaming from astern ... it is designed to be streamed from bow and also to have the oil-bag tied to it to quell breaking waves.
It has been the staple "lie-to" sea-anchor for donkeys years and I honestly cannot see where you get the idea from that it is to slow down a boat ...... apart from wind-driven drift ....
I hope more MN / RN are reading the post so that they can also confirm the above ...
In all my Life-boat training, EDH etc. prior and during Tickets - I never saw or heard about any other drogue or sea-anchor for life-boats for streaming from the stern ... (lifeboats actually have 2 pointed ends - so in fact either end can be designated as lead end ... in event of dead engine etc.) The only Drogue was that which was designed for Life-rafts - which is a different item ... designed to arrest drift on a "non-pointed ends" craft such as a square / round raft .... maybe you are confusing with that ????
Sea-anchor is Sea-Anchor ........... drogue is drogue .... they are different.
Was actually to get people to think about the names and not mix them ....
A proper made sea-anchor takes a large amount of pressure and force - witness the size of warp normally designated for it in a lifeboat ! It is made in serious heavy-weight canvas with doubled stitching .... otherwise it would rip apart quite quickly.
In fact there is so much force involved that if you were try and hand the sea-anchor back to to the boat .... you would actually pull the boat to the anchor not vice-versa ... I know I was the "idiot" told to do it at college to illustrate just that ! A sea-anchort when properly deployed has a tripping line fitted to turn the sea-anchor about - so that you can bring it in quicker ....
Having deployed a proper sea-anchor from a lifeboat as an exercise - I can say that it works ... I would not want to use one in earnest - as that means you are in dire straits ... but having had it demonstrated - I am sure of its ability. When it comes to more fancy or other designs such as drogues etc. - I leave those to others .... a Sea-anchor proper is for me ....
