Scuttlebutt losing it\'s lustre

I don't know if it's only me but this forum seems to be losing it's lustre somewhat. There used to be really good debates on sailing topics such as the best watch system, how to rig spinnakers, jet-skis, anchoring and much sailing related humour and fun. Recent postings seem to be a lot of drivel about speed cameras (please don't give Happy1 any more encouragement to post here), politics, racism, Paul Burrel or tedious in jokes amongst a few etc. Where are the quality posts of the past and the quality posters ? Or have we just run out of things to talk about.

Funnily enough badge

I've been thinking the same but I must disagree on one point.

I do know this is essentially a boating forum. However, I think the word essentially is an important one. It is the general subject that has brought us together in the first place.

Since I started writing on here some time ago, I've noticed that I have started to build up a "mental picture" of my little cyber pals (as SWMBO calls you all). And, consequently as with any group of people, some people feel like friends and others don't. So, therefore I have become interested on their opinions on any subject that could be thought of as important.

I think if you just had posts on items such as you suggest it really would get dull.

If you look, the same people are still posting and if asked, they still give a reasoned opinion on any sailing question posed.

Your overall point is a good one though. So what is wrong? Maybe it's just us!

Re: Scuttlebutt losing it\'s lustre

For a lot of Forumites, this is now the 'dog-end' of a glorious sailing season. You will notice that the (mainly) southerners who are able to stand the climate better than others are still chatty with plans - where to go - what do you think of this/that.

As for the rest, the boat is now probably safely tucked away, as mine is, and thoughts turn to other projects. I for one have successfully put off ripping out the bathroom suite/shopping for a new one/getting someone to install said new bathroom suite.

I know have 5 months to think of other things over my lunch break (possibly work) and to plan what I want to do for next season.

This doesn't mean that I will ignore the Forum completely, but maybe just dip in every now and again to keep the 'flavour' going.

Happens every year.

Regards

Donald

Re: Funnily enough badge

I agree that not all topics need to be 100% about sailing but you make a good point that they should be on any subject that could be thought of as interesting / important, not just drivel.I'm sure there are many interesting topics we have yet to discuss or we could re-visit. Maybe we have just become lazy about coming up with new and creative topics ? It's a shame because there is a lot of experience/knowledge in this community.

Any More Grumpy Old Men Out There?

Badger. I agree 100 per cent. The forum should be monitored in a far better manner and subjects completely unrelated to our great leisure pastime should be deleted at birth by the administrator. Other things that get my goat are references to 'SWMBO', 'squids', 'raggies','stinkies' and similar baby-talk by, apparently, adults.

Re: Any More Grumpy Old Men Out There?

That's a bit much coming from somebody who got heavily embroiled in a recent debate about the police and speeding !!

I agree with Badger's point in general. In particular, I don't like the political subjects which get posted on the forum, but I just use my democratic right to totally ignore them.

Badger losing it\'s lustre

I don't know if it's only me but Badger seems to be losing his lustre somewhat. He used to take part in really good debates on sailing topics such as Traditional Wooden Boats, the Devil's Triangle, Self-Tacking Jibs, PWC Accidents, and much sailing related humour and fun. Recent postings seem to be a lot of drivel about How to Post a Picture (please don't give the anoraks any more encouragement to post here, they've got the Website Feedback Forum to play in), or another tedious Scuttlebutt Losing its Lustre thread. Where are the quality posts of the past? Or has he just run out of things to talk about?

Personal attacks

As I've said, I have some sympathy with Old Badgers point.

One thing that has annoyed me recently is the personal attack - of which there are some in this thread itself!

The trouble with them is that if you happen to be the subject then you have two choices:

a. Ignore it - which really pisses you off 'cause you feel wimpy.
b. React because you need to defend yourself - at which point the thread usually degenerates and makes you look stupid.

Either way you lose and the forum loses because the serious nature of the thread is lost - people see it and can't be bothered anymore.

Note - I do differentiate between a personal attack and a gentle gybe.

I reckon that those who do indulge in this behaviour would not do so in a real, rather than cyber, situation.

Perhaps we should develop a code for dealing with people who make a personal attack. Any suggestions?

Full Marks Badger

For daring to stick your head above the parapet! No doubt you will get a barrage of abuse in varying degrees, disguises and silly languages. It will not however hide the very large degree of truth in what you said. All IMHO of course, and SWMBO reckons there could be serious squids to be made betting which raggies and stinkies jump up to defend the status quo.

Re: This is part of

"The Forum loosing its lustre cycle" It crops up a few times a year in between "The he's said nasty things about me cycle" or the "We need more posts about sternglands cycle".

It is the natural state of this Forum, the mags, TV, Radio or the Tory party that sometimes our enthusiasm wanes.

It normally leads to a large number of posted replies, one or to arguments and then normal service resumes.

I would suggest that this Forum has always been a mixed bag of pearls & nonsense, which is part of it's charm, and that PBO is more geared to technical bit's and bobs. If one joined a yacht club and the only discussion in the bar was about sailing technicalities it would be a dull old place.

Now where have I left my bike.

Re: Badger losing it\'s lustre

It looks like I'm not the only one who thinks the forum is not what it used to be, I thought you would have agreed as someone who can be relied on for good quality postings and debate going back to the "olde" forum days.Do you really not see a decline in the quality of conversation/debate ?

Re: Any More Grumpy Old Men Out There?

Yes, I also agree. There seem to be a number of people who need to start their own waffle forum, if they can find someone to host it. One wastes an awful lot of time trying to find interesting boating topics in amongst all the drivel. We are not all on broadband and can get very frustrated wasting time with looking at posts which sound interesting from the heading and turn out to be irrelevant.
