Of late there have been a number of postings, on here and other forums I participate in, that have had Google Earth (GE) connections.

When logging on to GE I encounter a display that is absolutely 'swamped' in rectangular overlays in various colours. This makes viewing extremely difficult and somewhat tedious.

Can any member of the esteemed panel that is Scuttlebutt help me eradicate this menace? I fully appreciate and accept that it is quite likely to be a result of 'finger trouble' and that I may lay myself open to the charge of being a technodummy, but I seem to have tried everything!

Thanks in anticipation,

Vince

If its not on turn on the side bar from the view menu, open "Layers" if not open, go to the bottom an untick the Digital Globe coverage box.

I think that your trouble

I'm sure VicS is correct.

Try unticking some or all of the boxes under layers:

The one in the question though was mentioned by who else but Brendan a few weeks ago. I would not have known about it otherwise.

Edit: And not to outdone by a screen grab, here are two that illustrate what I was saying. Click to enlarge.

These 'screen artifacts' are, I believe, caused by a graphics card delivering less than the minimum capability specified by Google Earth and/or by what you're asking of it ( see above ). The answer for me was a better graphics card - not an expensive solution.

If I had that problem today, I'd query the issue on one of the Google Earth forums....

The screen artifacts are nothing to do with the graphics card. They are exactly as VicS describes. They show the extents of Digital Globe QuickBird 0.65 m. resolution satellite imagery scenes and can be switched on and off under layers. The colours of the lines relate to the age of the image.

If you zoom in sufficiently a blue icon appears at the centre of each square. Clicking on this supplies date, a preview and ordering details of the image. Digital Globe supply a lot of the imagery to Google and this online catalogue is presumably part of their deal.

Och, well, sir. Sorry for that. You'll be right, then. I couldn't see the example image well and thought, as I sometimes do, that I'd come across that particular problem myself and thought to share a potential solution.

Now, the artefacts I had were rather different, and they were explained - as was the solution - by a kind chentleman on here.

Never mind, maybe the reference will prove useful to someone else.....
