I have now sent out first spreadsheet @ 00.17! Need to know numbers for wine tasting. Please advise if Veggie for evening meal. Menu will be same as previous years and I cannot remember what that was in English let alone French.

If you don't receive spreadsheet let me know by PM or my yahoo e mail ( if you have it) and I will send it again. I will update it and resend Ver 2 , 3 etc!!

I will send names and boat names only to marina on Wednesday.

Hope to be at SIB tomorrow if anyone has my mobile number and feels thirsty - or needs to escape the rain!!

Reminder - we encourage crews to mix for evening dinner so if everyone has enough € in cash for evening meal (approx. €30) that would be helpful. As I am incapable of counting by end of evening and we settle the bill as one bill I nominate one person to collect cash for each table. There is about half bottle of wine included with the meal but extra drinks must be settled separately.

Afternoon pontoon party circa 15.00FT it helps if everyone can bring a bottle (and nibbles if convenient). I do start the bar off but we were run dry of beer last year - will bring more this year - sorry guys for last years poor victualling!!.
 
Anyone thinking of crossing on Saturday instead of Friday?

Still watching the various forecasts like a hawk,and considering a Saturday crossing as a less bouncy sailing rather than motor-sailing alternative - certainly for a 27-footer! - and returning on Monday. Anyone else considering this?

As of this morning (Wednesday), forecasts for Antifer (50° 00' N/1° 00' W) are looking like:

FRIDAY (with seas still lumpy after this week's gales?):
WindGuru: SSW veering W later 5 gusting 6
WeatherOnline: SW veering W later 4/5 gusting 8/9

SATURDAY:
WindGuru: NW veering N 3 gusting 4
WeatherOnline: N 4/5 decreasing 3/4 then backing W3

SUNDAY:
WindGuru: S1/2 veering W1 veering N3
WeatherOnline: S2/3 backing SE3 backing E3/4

MONDAY:
WindGuru: not avail
WeatherOnline: S3/4 backing SE4/5

Some info is additional and some to correct a few of my omissions - info overload my only excuse.

Updated spreadsheet issued now 09.10.

Off to SIBS but will issue list to marina tonight and any updates.

I will be on Janes Buoy on Thursday getting it victualed etc and to receive crew arrivals so will be limited in updates after then.

We are planning to thrash down to Yarmouth tomorrow afternoon then leave on Friday morning. Hopefully this will give us a better slant across the channel. (If we are feeling really masochistic I suppose we could plug on to Studland.) I will wait to see how things develop but we could delay to leave Friday lunchtime with the first of the ebb and get in in the early hours of Saturday morning. If I could get out of an appointment on Monday I would go round to St. Vaast for a day or two.

This will be the first channel crossing on this boat - but we did do a delivery trip from Chatham to Portsmouth in June.

Fortunately I have a 43' and usually 6-8 crew for this bash so draw the line at a F6 on the nose or a F7 from other directions. The F7 only in case it escalates to a F8! Like others I sail for pleasure.

One reason we stick to Cherbourg YC is that there is no deposit and they will accept late number changes and weather dependency.

Ultimately while I would love everyone to make the event - every skipper must make his own decision as to the suitability of the weather for his boat, equipment and crew experience.

Our plan is to anchor in Whitecliffe Bay in the lee of the Island on Thursday afternoon/overnight and leave approx 05:30 Friday morning. Did consider Totland/Keyhaven but both could have been rolly and didn't fancy the Needles Channel on a full ebb with SW 5/6 in the dark on Friday morning.

Babylon/Jon, you've got a Vancouver 27 with wind vane steering, FFS! ;)

Windfinder Pro currently showing a constant F5 SW veering to W in Mid-channel for all day Friday. Also showing a wave height of 1.4-1.5m with a 6 sec period from the WSW. Lumpy to start with but calming down when the tide turns I fancy(hope)!

Based on current forecasts, for my smaller yacht and from Chichester I am thinking Saturday looks better. However, the forecast will probably change again. On Friday morning I may well be in Whitecliffe Bay too, waiting for a good opportunity (if at all).

Yep - two years ago due to weather we had 11 for dinner instead of 50-odd, they were very understanding.

I am almost certainly going to scratch again this year - pressure of work means the earliest I could do would be a Friday evening departure and without a crew that is just too hard work to be fun.

Hmmm I'm thinking that single handed on Ellida might be a little too much given the weather - it's a long sail and I've only done two passages SH so far. Ability not in question but I think my enthusiasm could wane quite rapidly after a few hours. So unless there's any changes, I'll be looking to get a space on another boat - anyone leaving from Portsmouth or Chichester who still has space?

I know, I know... where's the pansy emoticon when you need to apply it to yourself?! ;)

In fact the problem with short fat girls is that they don't do at all well to windward or with any great speed in too much of a chop.

I'll also be short-handed with an old mate's keen young son as crew and don't like breaking my golden rule of skippering (which is "Make everything as easy as possible for yourself and your crew") unless circumstances force me to. Will wait until tomorrow afternoon before making a final decision. If we do only come on Saturday, then we'll just have to slip before curlew's fart to make the dinner in good time.

Well well, it looks like Sailfree has done it again; willed away those pesky tropical storm remnants and pulled the wind out of the south into a tempting blast reach on the way over and a lighter post hangover downwind trundle on the way back!

What next? Cheap Normandy plonk turned into a fine Cheateau Montrachet would be my starter for 10 :D
