scuttlebutt cherboug trip 2013

I thought it had been set. Apparently some people need to book the time off work absurdly early. Can't remember what date was set though.

EDIT: I have it in my calendar as 13th to 16th of September, so assuming I didn't just make that up, it must be what was announced.

I am proposing the same format as previous years.

We like many arrive for the Friday night and go to one of the good Cherbourg restaurants. Berthing discount of effectively 2 sizes lower (equiv. to 20% discount) is available for whole duration of your stay for the list of boats that I give to Marina. Makes any extended stays cheap!! We sail back on the Sunday - headaches permitting!

Saturday morning wine tasting with nibbles at Normandie wine (extra discount offered to Scuttlebutt Cruise).

Saturday afternoon pontoon gathering for more nibbles and wine! with name labels worn to encourage everyone to mix and introduce themselves esp. to newbees.

Saturday evening dinner at Cherbourg Yacht Club with even more wine. A number of hardy souls have been known to adjourn to a number of boats for more wine until early morning. I retire when I am either hicupping or slurring my words or both!!

I prepare and distribute (to personal e mails only) a spreadsheet with participants boats/names/contact mobiles and approx departure times/ports so that newbees and experienced hands can either plan/arrange or just keep in contact for the X channel crossing. Enables some to arrange sail in rough proximity to others - good for channel virgins!

Each skipper is responsible whether their boat/crew/experience is suitable for the Xing and anticipated weather forecast. Weather Gods have ben good to us for last 5-6 yrs with unbelievable sunny afternoons so I am concerned that our luck won't hold!! It has been known for some to attend by Ferry for either domestic reasons (one of my crew can never get the Friday off) or weather/boat problems.

Menu/cost for dinner at YC will be distributed later and consensus view for preferrence decides. Last year we were encouraged by Fergus to go for the cheap option and it was definately the right call!

If any newbees are considering going I suggest you look at Forum "Members Events" for previous years threads which will give a flavour of the event.

An important note for those of us arriving late Friday night - French time is an hour ahead of UK time :). I was just brushing my teeth in the marina ablutions on Saturday morning when I realised this fact, and that I was therefore missing the tasting.

Fortunately this year a bigger boat means an earlier arrival, hence getting up at a sensible time so I don't miss the tasting, and a bigger hold for bringing the spoils back home :D
