Scuttlebutt 2009 Cherbourg Meet

Good time was had!

Funny old thing the channel weather, seeing a big high on the long range charts we looked forward to good weather, well it didnt rain but a week of strong NElys put paid to our plans to visit Alderney and made it wind over tide to get to St Vaast so plenty of time to enjoy Cherbourg! It was great to meet some of the forumites on our first scutlebut meet and the meal was excellent, as was the lunchtime moules frites ( just to keep stravation at bay till eve). Dabchick left at 0800 and motored to windward with mizen and two reefs in the main but managed 6 knots SOG and made Yarmouth by dark, despite the wheel house 13 hours of salt spray gets everywhere. This was made up for by a superb sail with a long fetch along the solent with a fair tide back to Portsmouth. We are certainly up for next year, thanks to the organisers and lets hope the weather and tides let us include St Vaast.....now to upload our digital photos and se if I can remember how to upload the respectable ones to the forum!

looks like you had a quiet trip over - when did you come back? looks like you've got the wind in a better direction that then rest of us had!

Our trip over was on the tuesday of the week leading up to the meet, before the NE set in, by the weds it was too windy for us to get beyond the outer breakwater from Cherbourg to St Vaast so we sat in Cherbourg until you guys arrived on fri and sat. We went back on the sunday leaving at 0700 BST and getting to Yarmouth by 1930. We motorsailed into a NNE- NE f 4-5, OK but a slog and the camera didnt get an outing. We had a brilliant sail from Yarmouth to Portsmouth on the monday, long fetch along the solent into a NE 5-6, lee rail under, fair tide, great day!

Hi Guys,

We left around 10.00 on the Sunday but diddn't berth until 07.30 Monday Morning. Just had time to chuck the gear in holdalls, including wet oilies and stagger home before jumping on a train to York.

The trip over was excellent but somehow we got swept west to Swannage and made little way east for about three hours despite the lies told by our log. According to the ploter, we were going round in circles, but as we could see the isle of Purbeck on the Port Side we didn't believe it (are there whirlpools thereabouts?). The Weekend was really enjoyable and I wil do it again, though it'll take another week or two to repair the damage to the boat and a bit longer, the damage to my Kidneys.

Thanks to Sailfree and Fergus for the organisation. and everyone who made these two scuttlebut cruise virgins so welcome.
