Scum!

Hello, Thames peeps.

I was running along the river towpath last night from Weybridge, down to Walton and up to Chertsey Bridge and noticed that there's a brown scum covering much of the surface. Is that some late summer algal thing or something else? I've seen green weed on the river in late summer before, but don't recall seeing a brown scum on the surface.

Squatter effluent? I've just returned from Kingston and the water is remarkably clear for the time of year.

It did look very much the right colour but, unless there's been an unprecedented attack of the runs among the squatters (perhaps the clue is in the name!), there was probably too much of it for that.
