Screeching winches

My 1988 Lewmar ST30s screech when under load. Normal servicing hasn't improved them. Am I right in thinking that I should replace the roller drum bearings? Presumably the screeching is cause by rollers that don't roll.

I have put up them until I went on someone else's boat last week with quiet winches

I assume you have lubricated the drive shaft - the bit the handle plugs in - it is just metal on metal.

Could it be the ropes screeching on the outside of the drums as the turns slip upwards (as they have to do)...

are your ropes knackered.... old rope under load round a winch will screech

Ummm. Two peeps mentioning ropes. Well I replaced all the running rigging last year except for the sheets. Hadn't thought of that. Ta folks

Are your winches getting stiffer than usual? Maybe the wear ring needs replacing. Download the pdf document on this page
