Screeching Steering

Hi
I have this horrible screeching sound when I just touch the wheel and hardly turn it. The sttering itself is OK, but the niose sounds like a fan belt screech. Has anyone come across this problem and give me an indication as to what it may be. I'm relatively new to this game and have a Sealine 218.

I'm not familiar with the 218 but usually the power steering has a pump which is driven by a belt; perhaps that belt is slipping?

Thanks, I'll probably have to get an engineer to look at it then.

Check the tightness of the belt. If it is too shiny, you may want to replace. They are not hard to do.

Is the screech coming from the steering wheel hub, or from the engine compartment?

The reason I ask is that my Sealine 330 flybridge steering wheel sometimes screeches (not loudly) but the noise is coming from the hub. So far it has resisted all manner of WD40's and similar.

Anyone else have a "screech"?

A lot of 218's had 4.3 Volvos in em.
Dunno if yours has.
Anyway.
Way to check is simple.
Fire her up, with engine hatch/cover off.
Get someone to operate the steering
Whilst yer pokes yer nose at the belt that turns the power steering pump.
Keeping your nose and other sticky out bits clear of all moving parts
Said noise will either be the belt slipping or the power steering pump itself.
Double check first there is fluid in the pump reservoir.

Remember the 4.3 lumps (think thats what you should have) are just marinised big old Yankee car engines.

Then again, I did hear a horrible screeching sound whilst helming a 218 years ago.

Cheers, thanks for the advice. It is a 4.3 big lump of an engine so I will take yor advice , especially with keeping sticky out bits clear of moving parts (having visited A&E last week after nearly slicing the toip of my finger off with a scissors which slipped on a tarpaulin as I was tring to cut a hole!!)
