Hi All,
Anyone got advice on how to paint scratches on the side of my Mirage26 above the waterline. It has gone in to the fiberglass but is only about six inches in diameter. It is also on the line between two colours. Do I need to put a filler first or will a undercoat do with a bit of sanding? I welcome comments and advice.

Regards

Will need filler - tubes of gel coat filler from chandler is easiest. Try and scrape off the surplus to leave sanding to a minimum. Wet or dry paper, used wet is best for sanding. Then use masking tape to separate colours; whip it off when paint dry - circumstances meant I left some on for a week, it were a right so & so to get off

A pal of mine gave me some useful advice about repairing gel coat.
Give the whole area around the repair a good coating of wax polish.
Then use a small grinding tool (Dremel or other type) to ream out the scratch, hole, etc that is to be repaired.
Fill the damaged area with gel coat filler and leave slightly proud.
Cover the repair with cellotape, using a flat roller or other tool to get the filler almost level with the surrounding surface.
When dry, peel off cellotape, use rubbing compound or other abrasive to finish. (The filler will be easily removed from the waxed area).
I have tried this technique, albeit with crossed fingers, but it really does work.

Hi I have just done this to my boat and am really hating myself at the mo. No excuses, coming into a finger berth and slipped on the throttle. Very interested to know how you got on with your repair. I am planning to use the plastic padding gelcoat filler product on mine, not sure how good a match the pigment will be, but fingers crossed? Did you use the waxing technique advised above? Makes sense to me. Any advice would be hugely appreciated.
