Hello,

The Scout Group I belong to was given a Tyler Slipper 42 ketch which is being turned into a sail training yacht for young people. It has never sailed and due to family bereavements sat uncompleted for over 20 years. Volunteers have almost got it ready for use but it has to have MCA Coding. Part of the application process is to provide information on seaworthiness and suitability over a period of 5 years use.

Can anyone supply any such information on this type of yacht please?

Thanks

Tom

As part of the MCA coding, you’ll have to get the boat surveyed by an MCA authorised surveyor. Given that’s it’s a complex business and there’ll be a lot of hoops you need to go through, I would find an authorised surveyor in your area and seek his advice on how to answer the questions you have and how to prepare your boat for its coding survey. I’d also do it sooner rather than later, as it may be that an older, home completed boat may not be able to be certified by the MCA unless you spend a good deal of money on it.

Hello, We have got a MCA surveyor and he was the one that raised getting information on the Tyler Slipper 42 sailing history as it is on the MCA form. The company that built is long gone although according to Companies House, is still trading but the address is obviously not a boat yard. This point is one of the main issues that we have and need to get information from owners past and present on the Slipper's sailing ability. Anything at all would be welcome as not a common yacht. Thank you - Tom

It would appear that Slipper 42 yachts have been used for circumnavigation and so maybe reposting this in the Livaboard Forum might attract the attention of folk who have owned and sailed one of these people. I may be a good idea to also post in Cruisersforum.com and Sailnet.com/boat-review/purchase-/forum.
