Hi.

We're planning a trip to this event, the week after next at Kip Marina, but I wondered whether anyone had any feedback from previous years. Is it worth the trip?

This is intended to be mainly a fact-finding trip, and we're interested in sailing cruisers up to around £10K. I don't know what their expected customer and market is, and clearly it would be a waste of time if the exhibitors are all dealing with boats at 10x that price.

Thanks in advance,

Tony Smith

Go most years - there are a few boats around at that price but it really can vary from year to year

Would not limit your visit to Kip although it has had quite a few in that price range in previous years I think - Ardrossan in past years has had a fewat that price range I think also - worth looking at Largs too as they leave all boats open so less hassle with keys -

Am down in Kip tomorrow hopefully, hangover permitting, so will try to see what they think will be there next week

Good luck

Thanks for the comments. It looks like it's a four hour (each way) journey for us, so we'll have limited time down there. On the other hand I don't want to waste the trip either. Is there a specific event at Largs, or an onsite broker?

Thanks

Tony S

ps - apologies if this is duplicate. I thought I'd posted this message, but it seems to have disappeared.

Hi, As Tom says if you are coming a distance to the Kip show, its worth while doing the rest as well.
Every year at this time is the Scottish Secondhand Boat show, Its on at Troon, Ardrossan, Largs and Kip Marinas. From Kip to Largs is just about 20-25mins, so well worth it. Driving from Largs to Ardrossan takes about the same, worth doing but not as much for sale. I wouldn't bother with Troon(another 1/2 hr drive), Everything thats for Sale in Troon, will be listed on the Brokerage list at Largs, so i'd only head there if you see something of interest on the Brokerage list.

I live between Largs and Ardrossan, and we always do Ardrossan, largs then Kip, all in the one day.

Whatever you do, Have a good day.

Cheers
Alistairr.

A Scottish friend (who's too busy to post cos she's off sailing, lucky thing) went last year to Kip and said there were 5 Bavarias, one electronics tent and one refreshment tent. Despite the fact she's only half an hour away she won't go again.

Might be worth phoning to see what they do have before bothering ?

a pragmatist is an optimist with a boat in the UK - but serious about not being in the UK !

Think that was a bit harsh - I remember being on board two Moodys and a Fisher and we did not really bother looking at others which were there

There is only the one tent but really it is all centred on second hand boats and you do not get many of them in the tent - Kip have a tent with electronics, engines and sails guys there. I admit there is a growing dominance of Bavs there but not many of them will be second hand yet

Did she go on to the pontoons? The Bavs sit on the dry in the car park

I too am half an hour away and will be going for my third or fourth year - always quite enjoy it I have to say

(Rhu has it too I think but always a bit out of the way if you are doing the others)

I wouldn't like you to depend on my figures but it'll certainly be a whole lot more than a handful of Bavs. I have in mind sixty or seventy, ranging from boats at a few thousand pounds up to well into six figures. Before you decide to travel, phone Opal at Kip and Euroyachts 20 minutes away at Largs (another 50 or 60?), and you might as well give the brokers at Ardrossan (Ancasta as was) and Rhu a ring too.

Opal and prior to them Kip always put on a good show at Kip Marina and generally have about 80 boats for sale. They range for appox. £2,000 to £100,000 I'm not sure what they have in this year but I've seen a few boats in the lower price bracket already on the pontoons. Why not give Opal a phone and ask them to send you their catalogue which I'm sure they will do. They also have a supplement which you can get on the day you visit, it contains late entries to the show.
The Marquee at the event is a trade fair with the outlets at Kip and others selling and advising boaters of their products and services.
Possibly it good that your friend is off sailing as her comments that you posted here do not reflect the boat show at Kip. There again maybe I'm biased as I berth at Kip, but have over the 12 years that I've been there have bought 2 boats at the show.

Euro yachts have 40 boats (at the moment) in the marina at Troon (more coming?) this year so it IS worth a visit to Troon even IF Largs have a listing of what is in Troon

Since I'm several hundred miles away from Kip I have no personal experience - merely thought if she was right the poor person driving for 4 hours would be v disappointed. Perhaps when she returns from sailing the Clyde she'll read this thread and realise she missed the pontoons.

Hope you all enjoy the show and don't go home having spent all your pennies and more on the dream boat (well maybe you should !).

Was down at Kip this morning - they will have over 80 boats there I was told (including a nice big Moody which I will buy if the numbers come up tonight - and if I buy a ticket I suppose!)

We were in Kip last night. Picked up a brochure. A lot of boats on the list were 'lying away'.

Noticed that they had also drafted in boats from down south. Three were from Guernsey.

Will still be poldiing the pontoons at Kip, Largs and Ardrossan next Saturday however. It a good day to meet all your chums and have a chat.... 'Ooooh you interested in that??? Theink its worth it...etc etc etc '

Don t forget that Kip is only 1/3 rd of the show....even more at Largs....and so much more down at Ardrossan.

There are quite a range of boats overall but at three locations...Don t forget Rhu across the water.

Thanks for the updates. I've checked with Opal, and all show boats are listed on their web site. So I reckon they only have 10 or so actually at Kip. They don't have a way of listing just show entries, or even just those at Kip

Maybe the Clyde-cruising lady was not so far out with her 5 boats last year.

So, Kip looks like a waste of time, lets see what "Euroyacht" have at Largs etc.

Thanks again,

Tony S

Just had another thought...

What's the deal at these shows? Is this just like publicity for the local broker, or do they actually make a special effort to have the boats available for inspection?

I'm just wondering what a visitor would actually gain by visiting on that weekend, rather than on another day.

Calling it a "show" sort of implies a special effort - but, cynically, does it just mean they charge admission?

Tony S

No, they do not charge admission

Am inclined not to believe there are only 10 boats at Kip as was there at the weekend and there were more than that then and they were clearing a pontoon ready for more

Yes, they are doing it to boost their second hand sales market which I guess would otherwise be very quiet at this time of year but despite that I will be going, I will see more than 10 boats at Kip and as the rest say more at the other marinas

I always enjoy it - tell us what you are looking for as I was looking at boats last weekend and may have seen something similar

Tom,

We're looking for a small cruiser, say around 22-26ft.

Opal are sending a catalogue so we'll see what that says. I've just been reminded about Rhu as well, and am looking to see if that could be incorporated into a round trip. Multimap suggests a bizzare route from Aberdeen to Rhu.

I am completely biased as I part own one but there are two Oyster 26s for sale - one of which is at Craobh so not so much use, one is at Fairlie Quay which is just next to Largs - you can get the details from Kip then see if it is worth going down to

Also saw a nice Halcyon 27 at 11K (more than others on the web I have seen)

There was also another much smaller one - I do not know what it was but probably sub 20feet, also a Contessa 26 has been there for a while on sale

Would not claim to know lots about second hand boats so these are not recommendations on these particular boats! (although we do love our Oyster 26)

Aberdeen to Rhu is a git of a journey with Glasgow in the way - I will be going to Largs, Ardrossan and Kip but unfortunately missing out Rhu which is a shame as they have always been decent with us when we were looking for a boat

Do feel free to PM if you need more info on the Oysters
