We just booked 9 nights on a Camp site near Loch Lomond. I will be taking my 4.5 m Rib and also our 3.9 m Honwave Sib. I see that you need to pay a registration for Loch Lomond which is fine.

We also intend to launch at Loch Etive and some of the other Sea lochs...... Am I right in my understanding that there is no registration etc required for the Sea Lochs.

Also do any other of the fresh water lochs need a registration payment.

Any information about this would be very useful (I know the Lomond fee is £80 for the year or £20 per day)

Tell the j###s you are English we own them , you could go fishing for Sturgeon.
all a joke .

At Loch Lomond you can launch at Balloch Slipway, Registration is cheap as chips, less than the £20 a day, as far as I know. You can pick up charts there as well do you can plan your cruising. Let me know if you need anything, I know the Loch quite well.

Only other Loch that I know of tha5 requires registration (but may be wrong) is Loch Ken. For LL you need to put big stickers on the boat, about 2’ long. The sea is free but any slipway may charge, just check locally. Beach launching is free.

Hi. £80 is only a seasonal launch fee for the main slipway. It’s about £6-8 for the registration and that’s only required once and lasts forever. If you have an inflatable, you wouldn’t need that slipway really, (You may want to have the reg numbers put on boards or a made up plate...because they just don't stay on inflatables for more than 5 mins) Just throw it in at the campsite, if its one of the waterside sites. The £80 is only if you want to use that particular slipway with a trailer for the whole season. One off launch is about £15 or £20 I think. No registration required anywhere else. Feel free to send a message if you want any more details. I’ve been on the loch all my life. Every weekend in summer at least, I’ll be on the water there. Amazing place to explore

There is also a public slipway in balloch too. That’s free to use.

Many thanks all of you that is excellent information.

Have you got any tricks to avoid getting eaten by the midges should the decide to come out early

We also intend to launch the 4,5 m rib at Kelly’s pier on Loch etive to follow in the footsteps of Donny Wilcox. This will be launched from a trailer and I tow with a Land Rover. Is there a slip at Kelly’s pier or is the beach suitable with this set up

Thanks

Read the Bylaws for Loch Lomond. They have their own version of the Colregs. ;)
I think the Loch Lomond By laws are Strathclyde rules and apply to other waterways in their area. Non of which you are likely to visit.
Other inland Lochs may have regulations regarding fishing such as Loch Katrine however for all waterways you should employ invasive species preventative measures before boating and after recovery.

Sea Lochs are no problem but invasive species procedures should be applied.

Just had a read of those..... My Head is now spinning, I have downloaded the Registration Forms they look a lot better.

It would seem that the Nation Parks website is sort of slightly confusing concerning the costs. I think is is actually just £8 incl Postage. But then there is the launch fees which seem only to be applicable if you use the National Parks Slipway.

Thanks for your help

No slip at Kelley's pier that I can remember. There is a softish gravel band at the top of the beach but after that it is generally firm until a fair way out. Should not be any problem with a 4 be.
There is a slip at Glencoe village by the pontoons for the hire boat but its gated and a fee is due, sorry no more details than that.
There is also a slip at Ganavan sands right next to Oban. No details only heard of it via Donny.

I normally park the caravan at North Ledaig caravan site and use their , primitive , slip.
There is also a slip at the other caravan site at the end of Ardmucknish bay.

Lomond is great spent many years Salmon fishing up the top end , Inversnaid to Ardlui. Gorgeous place and up that end other than the narrows near Pulpit rock you don't need charts stay 10m off the shore and you are plenty deep enough.

Enjoy

Many Many thanks. Very useful information. I am now filling in the forms for Loch Lomond for Registration. Been Crawling around trying to read the Hull number

you'll be fine sir...lots of it is common sense anyway. yellow buoys mark the go slow areas...common sense dictates it where there are boats at rest or anchor. main thing is to keep the speed down in the main islands area. give me a shout when you make it up here. what campsite is it you are staying at ?
PS if you are thinking about following in the footsteps of our own famous Donny....I would get you head into the charts...that man knows the area inside out and takes a route or line that most others wouldn't, out of caution or perhaps not even being possible in some tides. You'll really need to be aware of the tides too. depending on the power you have on the back of the sib/rib...you won't make much headway in some areas. especially the entrance to loch etive, at its full flow. I have seen the flood rescue guys training there in sibs. the sib can be up on plane and sitting still with zero speed over the ground. amazing tides around there. Beautiful for sure though.

on the sea lochs we will be in the 4.5 m rib with a 60hp on the back so plenty of power. We will certainly not be as adventurous as Donny.

Just out of interest, why are you going to the hassle of bringing two boats of such similar size? Even the 4.5m RIB is pretty small by Loch Lomond standards, and tiny compared to the RIBs typically used in sea lochs. Wouldn’t just the RIB be sufficient?

(And Ca Canny if heading out of Loch Etive in a 4.5m. Take a look at the photos of the Oban RNLI all weather lifeboat a couple of days ago passing there !)

I always take the Rib and the Sib and 3 Canoes. Lots of different places to visit by various craft. A Sib with a HP air floor (Mine is a Honwave T38ie 2) is a very different beast to any hard hulled boat. It goes in the back of the car (In my case a Land Rover Discovery). and can be set up and launched in places where you would not get a Rib in. This is the Joy of Sibbing. The T38 is also a very capable boat.

As for Hassle. I don't see it that way. You get out what you put in and I am travelling a long way so don't want to get there and for some reason not be able to do what I want to do for lack of Kit.

When I travel with any of my medium sized boats I almost always take the Sib and Canoes along as well
