I am off to the Scilliy Isles from Falmouth the first week in Sept, can anyone give me a steer of where to go for food drink and sites.

We were thinking about staying over for a day and catching ferries around the Islands but I am having difficulty in finding the information.

Well, there's 5 pubs on St. Mary's, 2 on Tresco, 1 on St. Annes. Didn't get any further.

Food was excellent everywhere, beer was excellent, weather was brill.

Just go with the flow, you'll enjoy it. All the inter-island boat trips are advertised on St. Mary's Pier.

We were there a couple of weeks ago. Theres a bloke with an old 1929 Riley, that will give you a guided tour Round St Marys for £16 for two. Or walk about 100 YDS and you will find all the pubs and restraunts there is. Look on the boards at the harbour for ferry times or call in there office near the co op. Get a little book from one of the shops for history and what there is to see.

Had a few meals on St Mary's over past few years- food very so so. Went to Pilot Gig last month, salad with seafood consisted of a few bits of lettuce, water cress and a bit of tomato with no dressing. Real 1970's cooking!

We did this (Falmouth to Scillies) this year and last and would highly recommend it - weather permitting.

Both times we went to New Grimsby Sound between Tresco and Bryher. Approach is pretty straightforward - around the top of the islands until the sound opens up then turn straight in - the West Country Cruising Guide is a great source of pilotage advice. The Tresco harbour master Henry Birch is happy to reserve a visitor's buoy if you can catch him when he has one free, mid- morning worked this year. Last year we had to wait a day until somone left. We preferred Tresco to St Mary's. Taking one of the inter-island boats is a very good way of recce'ing the other possible anchorages. There seem to be pretty regular services and there are timetables at the quays.

Keep a good eye on the weather and keep in the back of your mind that you may need to make a quick dash to Penzance or more likely back round the Lizard. And that you may need to get out from wherever you are at short notice.

Fresh water and diesel are available in St Mary's but it a lot of hassle. We found we could really cut down on water use when we had to.

Highlight of the passage over this year was seeing seabirds dive-bombing a shoal of fish which we re being encircled by dolphins.

Watch out for the Manacles rock on the way between Falmouth and the Lizard.

Enjoy - its very special.
