Sciliy Isles trip Q1 - Newlyn

There is a shower at Newlyn......one of the ladies at our club said it was the only time shes ever worn her wellies in the shower. Lots of fishing boats and the market also use it. think I saw a few eyes looking up from from the plug hole when I used it a few years ago.

Thanks for all the replies and PMs, some great information that has go me thinking. Not least that maybe I would have a good time just sailing round Falmouth, River Helford, Penzance and Newlyn areas.

I will of course remember from now on that it is the Isles of Scilly and shall do penance.

I was talking to a chap in Falmouth this summer and he had set off intending to get to IoS but the weather stopped him. He said that something to the effect that 80% of sailors Scilly bound from the Solent didn't actually get there. But as you rightly say, the second prize of Falmouth, Helford is a fabulous cruising area in its own right and not to be missed.

However if you do get to Scilly you will love it, it is just one of the most beautiful places I've had the pleasure of visiting, fortunately we have managed to get there for each of the past 4 years.

Spent 8 days in Newlyn in 2013 waiting for crew to arrive from Ireland, John the HM reckoned that if I stayed any longer I would have to get a Tattoo and sign up as an honorary Cornish man.
Very friendly and helpful place, and the pub/restaurant in the town serves the best Rib Eye steak in Cornwall, washed down with pints of Rattler.
I loved the place. Not posh but a real seafaring harbour.
Capt. RoN.

Just as a thought, when we did Scillies in 2011 we anchored in the entrance to Helford, then planning the tides carefully were able to carry ebb all the way to Lands End IIRC. We chose not to go into Penzance or Newlyn because it was a long way off the route, adding a lot of distance.

I only go to the Isles of Scilly on my 3rd attempt from Falmouth.

1st time round the weather simply said no - half the crew were sea sick even as we sailed downwind to Fowey.

2nd time in 1996, we were finishing supper in the Yacht Club and retired to the bar area only to see on the TV pictures of a ship aground - turning up the volume it became clear that this was in the Isles of Scilly. I phoned the CG who politely informed me that there were 3 guard boats monitoring the containers and detritus - but I was of course Master of my vessel and would have to make my own decision e.g. are you barking!

But I have made it now 3 times and would gladly go back again.

The first time we made it we picked up a visitors' buoy in Hugh Town and a French boat rocked up 15 minutes later to pick up the buoy behind us. We had our dinghy and some crew out putting a 2nd line onto the buoy and doubling up the first line, so they helped the French boat - who then promptly offered us fresh mackerel for breakfast - they'd caught this in the last two hours. Delicious, although some of our crew weren't au fait with the gutting necessary to prepare the fish.

Yes, and it also avoids the TSS which can be a bit of a pain.

I'm liking the the Helford option more and more.

I don't know how many times I've been to the Isles of Scilly - somewhere around 50 times I guess - and I have never been via Newlyn. Not that it's not a great place, just adds time and hassle to a perfectly simple trip.

It's 18 - 20 miles Falmouth - Lizard and 42 miles in a straight line Lizard - Hats buoy.

I assume that anyone bound for the IoS likes to be at anchor. So which way is the wind?

NE - N: Luxury - why waste a fair wind? Could stay at Mullion Cove (thence 40 miles to Hats).

NW Go on a reach to Lizard and then close-hauled. Maybe break the journey in the bay between Black Head and the Lizard (then 47 miles to Hats) or at Church Cove (44 miles to Hats). Newlyn would be a beat all the way and so getting there would take nearly as long as getting to Scilly.

W or SW: Anchor for the night either at Church Cove just E of the Lizard (then 44 miles to Hats) or if wind due W stop at Mousehole (anchor between it and St Clement's isle - plenty of room and good holding).

Due S: Here the difficult bit is to get to the Lizard. Go from Falmouth, Helford (56 miles) or Porthallow (52 miles). The problem with going to Newlyn or even Penzance once round the Lizard is that (a) you'd have to tack out of Mount's bay the next day, and (b) once at Lizard one will have a fast reach direct to Hats anyway so why waste all that work you just did getting upwind to the Lizard?

SE to NE: Go directly or anchor for the night in Mullion (then 40 miles to Hats).

Best for my taste is to go direct to the isles from Falmouth, but break the return at Mullion or Church Cove depending on wind.
